Has anybody had problems with putting there ninja 500 in first gear? The clutch doesn't engage correctly. When I push down for first gear the N light goes off but it doesn't go anywhere and when i come off the clutch it dies.
When I turn it on it smokes by the front of the engine. it looks like it's leaking oil or coolant.

jon made a mistake on this one.
Kawasaki transmissions can not be shifted up past neutral while the bike is stationary, because of Kawasaki's positive neutral finder.
The bike has to be in motion to shift into 2nd gear.

Make sure the side stand is up.
The side stand safety switch will kill the engine when the clutch is let out, if the side stand is down.
The side stand switch may be damaged.
If the switch is damaged, it won't matter whether the stand is up, or down, to kill the engine.
The switch is a safety feature to prevent riding off while the side stand is down.

Clean the engine with "engine degreaser"
Run the engine and search for the leak.
