kawasaki ninja 500r a good bike?

Gonna buy a kawasaki 2001 ninja 500r motorcycle. It will be my first bike. Also I am 19 years old, clean driving record with my car, no tickets, or anything. Any clue on a price ranger on insurance? ( I know i need to call insurance brokers and such to get quotes, just thought I would ask)
Also I am paying 2,000$ for it, it has about 13,000km and has never been dropped or anything. Bike is in near perfect condition.

A few things i would like to add is that the owner is a friend of the family, and I am 100% positive the bike has been taken care of, oil changes, tighten the chain...etc.
The only thing I am nervous about now is insurance, Is this a cheaper sportsbike for insurance compared to most other supersbikes?
 
The 500r is not just a good bike...it's a GREAT bike. That said, there are some hidden expenses. First, get an insurance quote for a 19 year old for this bike. This is important because insurance on a sport bike is surprisingly expensive. Also, look at the maintenance schedule in the bike's owner's manual....it's pretty expensive to maintain...particularly the tires since sport bike tires don't last long. Also, the equipment cost is expensive...Denise jacket with armor, Shoei Helmet, Sidi shoes...draggin jeans...all cost some serious coin. That said, there's nothing quite like 2 wheels and the open road.
 
They are good bikes, but I would spend a little more and get something like a Yamaha R6, Honda, CBR600R, Kawasaki ZX6R, or a Suzuki GSX-R600. There is very little difference in these four bikes, and all are proven performers. I would highly recommend any of these, so if you are a Kawi guy, the ZX6R would be a great choice.
 
Hear those words ; Slick inexpensive machine . A very sensible machine that will serve your purposes well . It is the typical UJM , and you'll love it because it is. With 13,000 k's and $2K you'll get a whole heap more fun and miles out of it. It is affordable to buy and above all affordable to keep.
When you do 'upgrade' it will be one of those bikes you will keep and use more often simply because they are so damn affordable to keep ,and you'll find that the fun factor is not based on speed alone .My TRX850 is my UJM and it stays because of these reasons and more. Insurance will be cheap
