Kawasaki kz750 timing problem?

There is an ad on craigslist for a Kawasaki kz750 with a timing problem. The guy says that it is off time enough to not idle, And he says if I rode it the way it is it would destroy the engine. Is it easy to fix the timing problem, and if it is an interference engine, is the damage already done? It's $500, and I want to make
Sure sure I'm not wasting my money on a Ike that's already doomed.
