Well clearly it depends on whether regulations were followed or not. I wouldn't discount the possibility that regulations were followed and because of that, BP is not liable for what happens because the wise all-knowing government took on responsibility for standards. If BP was going to be on the hook for any damage they caused, it seems reasonable to think they would be pretty careful. And either way it's possible they were not negligent and this is just an example of shit happens.

And yet it is right. As bad as it is, do you really believe the Gulf won't be okay 15 years from now? And if not, how do you explain the fact that hardly anyone today had heard of the '79 IXTOC spill before it was brought up by talking heads?

Why concern yourself with humanity? They are the cause of global warming, pollution, war, etc, etc, etc.

Wipe out about 4.5 billion of them and the planet will be better for it.

thats funny cuz all the drill baby drill people said it was one rig in some 3000...the second spill in some 40 YEARS..and thats a rightwing/conservative talking point.
even when Obama agrees with you you guys still bitch..

Sarah Palin is blasting President Barack Obama’s oil drilling decision as a “stall, baby, stall” plan that is little more than a cover for enactment of climate legislation now pending in the Senate.
Writing in National Review Online, she said that “behind the rhetoric lie new drilling bans and leasing delays; soon to follow are burdensome new environmental regulations. Instead of ‘drill, baby, drill,’ the more you look into this, the more you realize it’s ‘stall, baby, stall,’” Palin wrote.

and especially her fuck the studies lets just poke holes in the planet statement:"I’ve seen plenty of such studies. What we need is action — action that results in the job growth and revenue that a robust drilling policy could provide."

On April 20, 2010, at about 10 p.m., an explosion occurred on the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. There were 126 people on board at the time. Fifteen of those were injured and eleven died. The Deepwater Horizon, owned by Transocean Ltd., was under contract with BP to drill an exploratory well. BP was the lessee of the area in which the rig was operating. At the time of the explosion, BP and Transocean were in the process of temporarily closing the well, in anticipation of returning it to commercial production. Another company, Halliburton, had completed some cementing of casings in the well less than 24 hours prior to the accident. The Coast Guard responded to the explosion and fire.

The next day, on April 21, 2010, pursuant to the National Contingency Plan, the Administration named Rear Admiral Mary Landry as the Federal On-Scene Coordinator. A regional response team was established, including representatives of the Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Commerce (DOC)/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Department of the Interior (DOI) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as state and local representatives. The regional response team began developing plans, providing technical advice and access to resources and equipment from its member agencies, and overseeing BP

and he works in the industry so he would know better than either of us.. To say that BP has no responsibility because they had govt regulations to fall back on is ridiculous.considering they pretty much had the govt in thier back pocket for the last 10 years at least.

so its kinda hypocritical for republican/obamahaters here to try to throw up his statements about offshore drilling being safe in light of this incident isn't it

RIght, so when the next safety faux pas happens the oil will be right there to be soaked by the sand and marine life.
