Kate Winslet Should Have Won For Titanic

Titanic was pants! Cheesy and predictable.

The acting was adequate.........no more.

Proof that a big budget, great specioal effects, and a big-name cast, do not neccesarily mean a good movie.

Pearl harbor falls into the same category.

Titanic was cheesy, but it was also really entertaining at the time of release. I thought Kate Winslet was great in the role. I can't remember who won the Oscar that year instead of her (was it Kidman?) but remember wishing Kate had won - I thought she deserved it.

Have to disagree - if you look up "overhyped" in my dictionary you will find it defined as "Titanic", and if you look up "wooden" it will say "description of the acting of Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslet" in "Titanic""

Titanic! I adore that film!! Snivel, sob, girly cries...
NOT when the 'boat' sinks, but the whole old lady looking back on lost love bit....
Brilliant stuff!! It did what it said on the tin!

I don't HATE Titanic but I wouldn't just watch it unless it was the parts at the end where it's sinking, the big effects setups are great. The actual story itself is just about passable. Obviously writing a love story like that wasn't James Cameron's bag after scripting Terminator and Aliens (OK, there are some 'touching' moments in both films).

It always seems to me that Cameron just wanted to make a cool film about the Titanic which he was interested in (hence the underwater stuff at the beginning which used real footage from real dives) but the suits pushed for the other side of it with DiCaprio/Winslet romance. It took him a while to grow to the idea of Celine Dion's song, and just think of the movie WITHOUT that? The song and the sudden burst of heart-throb popularity for Leonardo DiCaprio are what made the movie so successful.

Helen Hunt won it that year. The only american up for nomination.....and IMO Helen was the weakest nomination by FAR.

I always thought Kate should have won for Sense & Sensibility. An extremely difficult role and she was only a teenager in her first major (i.e more well known than Jackson's Creatures) film. Great performance.

Incidentally I adore Titanic ;) No way the kind of film I'd normally like! It's a load of old cobblers but from the ice-striking onwarRAB it's great - as a Titanic enthusiast I love it, despite all its cheesy faults ;)

Much as I like Kate Winslet, I thought Titanic was a film where the special effects overshadowed all the actors. Kate was excellent in a film by Peter Jackson called Heavenly Creatures as well.

I don't think Helen Hunt deserved the Oscar that year - but neither did Kate Winslet. Her performance was OK but it was nothing amazing. Who else was nominated?

Judi Dench- Mrs. Brown
Helena Bonham Carter- The Wings Of The Dove
Julie Christie - Afterglow

Out of the 5 nominated i would have given it to either Judi Dench or Helena Bonham Carter

Thinking about it, she hasn't actually done that many movies, but from what I've seen she's always excellent. Particularly in Quills, Iris and definitely my favourite, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. She's so different in each of her films.

In that it was a sappy Americanisation. PLUS, I always maintain if she had just moved over at the end there would have been room for both of them and he wouldn't have frozen - she was lying on a double door or something. Dozy mare!

The Full Monty was the film of the year for me!
