Karl Pilkington - An Idiot Abroad on Sky 1

He's said it in not so many words a good few times. It uses his name because it's his creation, and because he's the big name. Till his podcast, few knew who Karl Pilkington was, the name wouldn't ring a bell and Karl wouldn't have become anywhere near as well known as he is.
 
I only got into podcasting a couple of months ago and have been downloading anything and everything that looks interesting. Inevitably I discovered TRGS, found it to be the most consistently funny thing I've ever heard (with David Mitchell's Soapbox a close second) and have since been downloading everything I can find and listensing to it repeatedly, so I can attest that even by half-way through Season 1 of TRGS, Gervais was saying they may as well re-name it to TKPS, as everything seemed to be revolving around him. As fans will no doubt know, it all goes back to their XFM days, where Karl was arguably the main draw by the time that came to an end. As Digital Sid says, Gervais used his name when what was essentially still the old XFM show went to podcast as no-one outside their relatively tiny audience had probably heard of KP.

Incidentally, if you're a Pilki01 fan (and who isn't), you should, ahem, search the internet, where you can get pretty much everything that G, M and P did, even the early XFM stuff.
 
Character? Script?

If you know his history and have listened to the podcasts, there is no way any of what he says is ever scripted!

Karl is a legend. I was laughing from start to finish. My Mrs just felt sorry for him!

Toads, toilets, the 'alright wall', kung fu, fire massage, etc. Pure quality.

Wish they hadn't shown as much as they have done in the trailers and preview show, as a fair bit I'd already seen.

Karl is very witty and funny in his own right, Gervais making out all his great one liners are unintentional irritates me.

His running commentry on the woman eating insects off a stick was legendary. His phone conversations with Ricky were great too.


It's been advertised to death as well, ratings don't seem great.
 
820,000 makes it the most viewed Sky 1 show by a fair distance. The only shows to regularly beat that this year are the big US imports (Lost, 24, Bones).

Yeah some people will think the same no doubt, he is an acquired taste I guess, I love his comedy cause of the things he says that you've just never thought about before.
 
I thought the ending to the India one was really beautiful.

he spends the whole time in the chaos and weirdness of the city,

and when he gets to the Taj Mahal it's symmetrical and white and clean and peaceful, and he touches upon that it's the only thing that makes sense in India.

I thought he might have got that the person who built it was also trying to make sense of death too... he isn't an idiot at all is he?
