just.... wrong....

You actually try to sing good at karaoke? The whole point is to be drunken and stupid. I always make fun of the "good" singers. It's not Star Search.

The only time I don't make fun of singers is when they bring their own music and sing a song they wrote.

Other than that...nothing is funnier than a group of underdressed coeds trying to sing anything by Whitney, Mariah, or Aretha...or Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.

I don't know about you, but anytime I hear someone singing off key, or off the rythm, it makes me cringe. Especially if it's a song I really like. And if you had to listen to it for 5 hours in a row, every Saturday night, you might have more of an appreciation for the good singers. I know that part of the fun of karaoke is to get drunk and make a fool of yourself, but I'd rather listen to people who sing well. I have music in my blood, and it really is almost physically painful for me to listen to someone trash a good song. I'm not saying everyone who sings karaoke should be a fabulous singer. If that were the case, there would be no reason to appreciate the good ones. What I AM saying is, if you are going to deliberately sing badly, I think you're an asshole. That's uncalled for. And if you sing the same song every week, and STILL can't keep the beat... get the fuck off the stage. Successful creatures on this planet are the ones that learn from their mistakes. That being said, I respect anyone who will get up there in front of 50 drunken critics and give it their best shot, whether they can sing well or not.

I was a choir/drama geek in school as a kid(grammar thru high). I can sing, I'm classically trained. I appreciate beautiful voices(one of my favorite singers, that I have seen perform live 4 times, is Sarah Brightman). I also like to see operas and choir performances.

I guess I just prefer certain times and places for appreciating good singing and for some reason, a filthy bar filled with drunks is not my ideal location for that activity.

I hear ya, but there's limited options around here. going to a concert for me usually means a plane ride, rental car, and lodging for the night, on top of the actual ticket cost. About once every two moths, there's live music here on the island, but 99% of the time, it's reggaton. (or however the fuck that's spelled) And I don't know about you, but I can't stand that shit. There are no dance clubs of any kind here(except one that plays reggaton).

I'm sure I've mentioned this before in these forums, but on this tiny island paradise, there are about two things to do for fun. Go to the beach, or go out drinking. So as far as hearing people singing live, The only place to do it here is in a filthy bar full of drunks.
