Just How Do They Get Those Unlock Codes??

I have a question which in particular isnt aimed at G1 but definately is a valid discussion as unlocking the G1 seems like a large topic of discussion.

My question is :

Just how do "commercial" websites which offer pay-for unlock codes actually get the unlock code?

Spam. Sigh. I'm sorry I wasted the time to waste a good joke on you.

Here's an answer, sort of, mr. serious: some people say they have a program to generate them, some people say they have a database from the manufacturer.

His post wasn't spam. Please don't report it as such.

I'm guessing that they figured out the algorithm that HTC used in their lock codes, and therefore can generate as many as they'd like.

I don't know exactly how they do for the G1 but there are different methods. For some phones they use a "calculator" to generate the code base on your phone's IMEI, sometimes they need you to run a small program on your pc or phone to give them some extra info about your phone. They also can have a database with an IMEI range and the proper unlock code for each one.

I figured it to be something like a keygen.

Input IMEI - Algorithm - Output's unlock for phone.

I wasn't sure if there was a definitive answer.

Did find this:

"On some phones like Nokia's, it's a formula based on the IMEI Serial number of the phone. You punch in the serial number, the country you're in and the Cell phone carrier that it is locked on. ( locked on Tmobile or whatever) and then the little wizard pops out the code that you need to press onto the phone, when it asks for Subsidy password when u put a different companies sim in the phone.

On other phones, like Motorola's the command has to come from a computer thats hooked to the phone via a cable. So when you buy this software, it usually comes with a bunch of diff cables, for all the diff types of phones since they have different plug ends."

Ok guys.
There is no algorith to generate the unlock code.
The unlock codes on these HTC phones are random and do not follow any pattern and hence you cannot make an algorithm.
The only way that you can get the codes is by database access.

In the US I have found that unlock codes are pretty worthless on the G1.
The idea of using the G1 on another system is pretty moot, Between protocol and freq differences for 3G there is really no place to move the g1 to that would need an unlock code.

If you want the unlock code and have t-mobile service now, just call them. they will send you the code. or pay one of the unlock services if you trust them.
