just got vista and am unable to get a full screen with photos Etc?

when i look at any of my photos they are set in the centre of the screen with a big white border around them instead of a full screen this is also the case with my snooker/pool and other games all very small with this white border around them, i have tried the display setting but this did not help.
any help out there
