Just got a call from BELL? (POSSIBLE SCAM ALERT!)

Just got off the phone with a "Bell?" person, sounded like he was from India. He know what I had as programming and name on account.. Anyways he started by asking me how much I pay for Bell Satelite.. told him $120.. he then told me they have a special, $31, for everything I have now already plus I would get new reciever (I have 6 now) and a new dish.. He told me I would need to cancel my current account and start a new one.$31 was good for 2 years... anyways sounded to fishy for me.. I told him to call me tomorrow, he told me specials ends today. .. I said no thanks then.. he told me he would call back tomorrow.... 100% sure its some kinda scam, plus call was long distance... anyone else get a call like this??
 
That certainly does sound like a scam. Bell is not going to have you cancel your account to give you a promo. Don't they have a policy against more than 6 receivers? Perhaps this is an account stacking scam.

I do recall getting a call similar to this when I was a Bell customer. I think it was during the summer of 2006, but the guy didn't know any of my account info.
 
lol wow this is really strange... when I got home, on my Caller ID call-display, it said I missed 2 calls from "Shaw Communications Customer Service". About 10 minutes after coming through the door, they called again, and it seems like the same kind of call that you had. They wanted to get me on this "post-Olympics Special Offer", which for 6 months, I could get Shaw Phone, Digital TV, and Internet at 75% cheaper than the regualr price. He also claimed that today was the last day to get this great offer, but it seemed very fishy, so I hung up on him.

Anyways just called Bell, told them what happened..they told me although they do have 3rd party companies that do offer promo's for them, the one this person offered didnt seem right to him.. he said next time get a promo code and agent id, and call Bell back to confirm....
 
This is definately a scam. Anyone calling on behalf of Bell would already know how much you pay for Bell TV.
They also would never offer to cancel your existing service and start a new service.

Nem, who has recieved these calls before and strung the guy along for a number of days asking all kinds of questions
 
They no doubt want you to cancel your current account and start a new one so they can get your credit card number.
 
yes this is along the lines of the "free" cellphone offers. They are basically playing on people's greed to get a hold of their credit card numbers and possibly SIN numbers too.
 
We got a call last night. My wife took it.

I just called back. It's TDL Satellite service, providing service for Bell (??)

We're in Ottawa.
 
Had this call about 2 weeks ago at 7pm, definitely an Indian accent. He also asked me how much I pay for Bell (land line only, no internet, no sat). I said if you are from Bell then you know how much I pay. "Yes, yes, of course". I said I would never buy anything else from Bell and said "Bye, bye" and hung up in his ear. I should have blown my Fox 40 referee's whistle that I have next to phone to blow in his ear and hopefully blow out his ear drum as well. I have used it once already to knock off those jerks who tell me there is nothing wrong with my credit but ... So why do you call me on a do-not-call number? They say this is my last warning but that was a dozen last warnings ago. How the hell do we stop these bubble headed jerks? sailmaker
 
Get a phone that blocks phone numbers. They work when phone company call blocking and do not call lists don't.
 
What kind of phones are you referring too? I have higher end panasonics and don't see an option to block certain numbers?
 
Look for a phone with "call block" feature. My Panasonic KX-TG6412C has it. The phone may ring once, but as soon as the number is recognized by the phone it sends a busy signal and hangs up (or something similar).
 
My Panasonic phones (DECT 6.0) have it also.

-Press the button for CID (caller ID).
-Press Down arrow on center button untill you find the offensive caller.
-Press Select.
-Press Save.
-Select 2 "Block calls".
-Press "Select".
-Press "Yes".
When this number calls you again, your phone will ring twice and disconnect.

Best feature on the phone :D

Just had another call from India (female this time). "Congratulations, your number has come up (god I hope not) to receive a free cell phone" or some such. Second call from these shysters or gangsters in a few weeks. This time I told her to buzz off, you are a con artist. Should have blown my Fox 40 as I said I would. So now I have to subscribe to CID for 8 or 10 bucks a month to stop sleazy crooks from another galaxy who are too lazy to earn an honest dollar? Come to Canader eh and live off us poor taxpaying schmucks. sailmaker
 
don't bother with caller ID. They usually spoof a local number so people will pick up.
 
I had one of these cold calls and it was legit. I ended up signing with Bell. Got free internet for 3 months. a PVR free for a year and 2 SD receivers, 6 theme packs and standard HD channels. It was a third party working for bell, Indian accent and all but for real.
