Just good friends 1984 christmas special

Thanks for replies, but the link for amazon is not the christmas special I meant. It is the one from 1984 when Penny and Vince first met. The one on the series 3 dvd is from 1986

Universal Playback dont own it at all.

Its a BBC series and the BBC have licenced the show to Playback.

However the planned series 3 dvd was due out in June but never came out.

The Xmas special on there is nothing of the sort.

The last episode of series 3 just happened to be aired on Xmas day---its simply the final episode.

All 3 series are listed for release next June -but dont hold your breath.

The 1984 special the OP wants is out of circulation.
It contains a great deal of Beatles music and the BBC have been unable or unwilling to pay for clearances beyond the original airing.

The BBC never repeated it and UK Gold did schedule it in the early days but it was pulled before broadcast and never aired.

The same problem affects it on dvd which is why even though all 3 series should be out on dvd next year , the special wont be.

UK Drama have rerun the show a number of times recently and they also miss out the special.

Someone out there did record it when broadcast and copies of that recording were made available on vhs and dvd via ebay.

Look out for it

This special is really becoming a rarity. Did yoiu notice that the Fern britton special yesterday about Christmas TV just referred to the 1986 final episode as the Christmas when Just Good Friends was on. Even Paul Nicholas and JAn Francis didnt mention it at all. I noticed there were clips from the special in the clips compilation telling the story of the show but this almost made out that the first episode told how they were due to be married and then he jilted her. But the series began five years after this event. I wasnt into JGF at the time but watched the repeats before the final series aired. I borrowed the special off a workmate in 1986. I wish I had been able to copy it then. Maybe it will surface again one day.

The rights to Just Good Friends have now been acquired by Eureka who are releasing a box set of all three series plus the December 1984 Christmas Special. It's being released on 26th October 2010. Details on Amazon here:

The reason for the non-availability of DVDs of this show for many years now has been copyright problems with some of the music used, partiuclarly a Rolling Stones track used in the Chistmas Special. This has been erased and replaced by sub-titles, the only legally-acceptable way, apparently, to get around the problem. Better that than for DVDs of this still much-loved comedy drama remained unobtainable.

It's rather more than just a single Rolling Stones track.
Stones music figures in the special for quite a lot of the first 1/4 of the running time .
Music is also why several bits were missing from the earlier series 1 and 2 release .
Blanking out the soundtrack and then showing dialogue via subtitles is a new way round the ongoing problem of music rights .
It's not been tried before so it remains to be seen whether it just looks bloody stupid or not.

As long as there's not too much of it they might get away with it but the least they should do is offer a branching option to let you choose whether to skip those scenes.

The series 1 and 2 release from before worked fine even with some scenes missing but being interrupted by subtitled silence may well make the whole thing ridiculous.
