Just Bought an iPad 3G at Best Buy, how do I add it to Verizon?

The geek squad guys said that I didn't need to get MiFi. They said I could buy the iPad 36 from Best Buy and then add it to my Verizon account later.... are they lying or can I actually do that? If I can, then could someone tell me how?
