Just bought a Palm T3, couple questions...

I just upgraded from my m505 to a T3 on ebay, and I have some questions regarding the bluetooth, MP3 playback, and transferring stuff from my current palm.

1. Can I share my DSL connection over bluetooth to my palm and surf the web on the T3?

2. I know I need an SD card for MP3 playback, but my question is wether or not I need headphones plugged in to play them, or can it use the built in speaker? If it can, can it use MP3s as alarms?

3. When I first get my T3 and plug it in(I use iSync), will it automatically just move all my files, programs and settings onto it? Or is there something special I need to do?

Thanks for your time and responses!

Yes, but you'll need to by Softick PPP at http://www.softick.com/ppp/ . How far away you can be from your computer depends on the quality of your bluetooth connection.

Well, you can hear the MP3's coming out of the speaker if you hold your ear up to it but I don't think that's what you really want. In general, you can't use MP3 tunes as alarms.

It will but you may not be happy with the results. There are probably at least several OS 4 programs that won't work with OS 5 and no hacks will work without having an OS 5 hack program. The safest thing to do is to move your Palm\YourUserName\Backup folder to a temporary location. You can then sync your T3 to populate your PIM applications. You can then reinstall your third party programs one by one, checking to make sure they don't cause any problems. For programs you use frequently, a visit to each web sit to check for OS 5 updates would be a good idea.

Thanks for your replies, that helped a lot!

I'm looking into The Missing Sync for the bluetooth web access right now, and so far, it looks promising. I'm still waiting to hear from someone who has used it, but I think it's what I want.

I have one more question I just thought of. I have the original Palm Backup SD Card. Will it work in the T3? I've noticed here in the forums more than a few comments about not so great battery life on the Tungsten line, so I want to make sure I have all the bases covered.

Thanks again,
Sean

More glad you got the T3 now, huh?! See - it all works out. Congratulations and welcome to the world's best forum!!

I also went from a 505 to a T3 - and compared to our 505s, you'll LIKE the battery life on the T3. If you haven't already, when you get it OPEN THE BOX, put on the charger, DON'T TURN IT ON, and charge that baby up for 3-4 hours. Please listen to me and don't listen to anyone else on this one!! Resist the temptation lad . . . resist the temptation. Charge that thing up FFFUUULLLLLL.

The initial charge is important, and don't be shy about sticking on the cradle during regular "computer time," too. I try not to leave min hooked up for more than 4 hours at a stretch. Also, don't be afraid to run it quite a ways down AFTER the first charge, and then OOOMPHHH it back up again with a good 3-4 hours. Get that initial thing "whacked" with a good charge. Disable Bluetooth and Beam Receive, lower your brightness to AT LEAST HALF (I'm VERY happy with about 25%) - and your battery life will be very, very good.

As for the SD Backup Card,
1. I had one and when I looked at the "security" of it I laughed - it's a joke. Used it for a year, but wouldn't again even if it worked.

2. I don't think it has the capacity to hold what you'll be backing up on the Tungsten - depending on the "vintage," it's either 8MB or 16MB - more than likely too small to do the job.

Arguments (friendly of course) rage on here all the time about backup programs, and there's lots of BIG fans of BackupBuddyVFS and BackupMan. TealBackup is new & allows for multiple timed backups and ENCRYPTION and Selected Files. I'm not using it presently, but will as an auxhiliary to CardBackup (I prefer the latter since it's been dependable, and that's REALLY endorsement coming from me since I'm such a Teal nut). REAL protection would be two programs from two makers with their own files, but I REALLY TRUST jkware's "CardBackup."

My choice is jkware's CardBackup (err, that would be me and a couple of others) because I've actually TESTED it with 2 DELIBERATE hard resets, and two that were not, and it's flawless!! I have an SD256 Panasonic, and have CardBackup do TWO backups to TWO different files - one at 5AM with auto-off, and the other at 5PM with auto-off DISABLED in case I'm working on something. You can have up to 8 timed backups, as well as "any time you want." Backup of most "recently added file changes" with CardBackup takes less than 6 seconds; full restore is REALLY quick and you can select files NOT to back up. It's $11.95 and I think it ROCKS.

Any good backup proggie and a large SD Card would be preferable in my view to the one you've got (probably too small anyway) or a "dedicated" Backup/Secur Digital Card" bundled by PalmOne (pricey and not worth it). Assuming you put 20MB on the handheld, then TWO backups would be 40MB - so a 256MB card affording a "net" 243 meg is already down to 200MB - but that's quite a bit at least for me. 512s and 1GBs are coming down all the time, so you might even want to get one of those and "really be set."

Hope this helps and once again, welcome and congrats.

Jim - have you actually tried this? If you have a T3 and the speaker output is really that poor, you may very well have a defective unit.

I often use my T3 to listen to my favorite "albums" while in bed. I just start it up and set it on the nightstand by the bed where even with the volume turned way down it is still loud enough to enjoy (and sometimes annoy my wife).

Thanks egarc, that was an awesome link! There was another link where he pretty much reviewed in full The Missing Sync, and answered a ton of my questions!

THere was only one slightly unclear part in the review, which you may know the answer to:
-REGARDING BLUETOOTH INTERNET SHARING-

I'm not entirely sure, but is he saying you can, but he's not quite sure why someone would want to? That's pretty much what I read it as.

Thanks again everyone for helping me out. I've been away from the Palm scene for far too long, and it feels good to update and get back in :) .

Well, it's finally here, and the only thing I can say is "Why didn't I get this when it came out?!?!".

It's seriously a million times better than my m505. The upgraded graffiti is a little strange, but I'm sure I'll get it down in a few days. Voice recorder, super cool! No more trying to get to the memo pad app and writing sloppy notes while trying to drive! The Bluetooth sync seemed slow... but I'm not sure if I'll really use it that much anyway.

I've got a quick question now, is there any way to get rid of the Versamail thing in the single-day datebook view?

I doubt I'll ever use it, and it's super annoying...

Thanks again everyone!

There sure is a way to get it out of there. It'as what good 'ol PTL would recommend to every person on the planet at this stage:

1. Buy a T3, Sprat it, Flash it, Tealize It. TealScript will give you ANY graffiti you want, LtCarter47's way - with all "custom" characters if you choose, and/or multi-stroke characters.

2. Add Agendus, Bonsai, FindHack and Mobile DBase4 as you wish for the "organizational stuff."

3. ENJOY LIFE!!

VersaMail can be removed, along with QuickTour, Welcome, Photos, Kinoma and Docs2Go (so you can replace them with the UPDATED versions) using Brayder's JackSprat. JackFlash will then move 4, 5, 6,8 - 10MB in my case - of applications/programs to FLASH.

There's plenty of it discussion on it on these forums.

VersaMail will NOT be removed from your Palm Desktop - but it will go bye-bye on the T3, and you'll gain around (if memory serves) 1-1.5MB. Getting rid of the extra languages ALONE is 4MB. RealPlayer can be replaced with a better player if that suits you. I freed up 9880k, have used 7880, and recently dumped some apps I wasn't using - I now have 3000k left in flash -- and 98% left on the handheld running 50+ apps, hacks and DA's.

It's not a move for the meek, LtCarter47 - but you did ask!!

HAVE A GOOD ONE, new T3 owner! Good goin'. You ain't seen NOTHIN' yet, by the way - there's something comin' in around 2 weeks that'll REALLY make you glad you're a T3 owner.

But if you don't want to get rid of VersaMail altogether--just get it out of the Agenda view in Calendar-- go to Calendar, menu/Options/Display Options, select Agenda (from the three boxes showing Agenda, Day, and Month), and uncheck Show Messages.
