So I've never had a new bike...any tips on the break-in period?

Guy at the dealership said not to take it over 60 till 500 miles, and first maintenance. Thats fine.

The manual states that you shouldn't go past half-throttle.

Thats also fine.

Now, I'm wondering when to shift on this thing...its got no RPM gauge. The manual says to shift up to 5th by the time you hit 30 MPH. I don't buy it.

Any tips? I'm at about 200 miles at this point, and wondering whats what.

LOL...this is actually pretty good advice.

Breaking in the "M" is pretty easy. Keep riding it...but keep the speed down to what's posted. What I did was make sure to get up to top speed quickly...but then didn't go over. I also didn't leave it at the same speed for a long time...I varied the throttle up and down (slightly) to make sure it wasn't just stuck at one speed.

This worked very well...additionally...not only is the engine new, but so are your tires. So...tight, high lean turns are something you must avoid for serveral hundred miles...Search for other posts on "Tire Scrubbing".

Having unscrubbed tires can really ruin your day.

As for the manual's listed shift ratio's...ignore them. Feel the bike as you ride...you'll know when to shift.

While a tach would have been an awesome addition...You can easily get away without one. The M is a great bike, and I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself...just stay smart & ride safely.

Congrats on the new ride! Follow the owner's manual for 300 more miles, being as gentle as you can with the bike. Then change the oil and ride it like you stole it!

I am purchasing a new 2007 M50 Boulevard tomorrow.
I have a blue one on order.
Does anyone have the blue 2007?
Glad to hear from experienced riders of this bike.
I just passed my safety test at the University and will be taking it very
easy for a while.
I am 45 and very good at other sports but have never ridden on streets on motorcycles.
As stated, I value thoughts from experienced riders.
Best,

Ride as if no one see's you.

The more visable you are the better. Bright colors etc....

Anticipate, Anticipate.

Wear a helmet and other safety gear. I worked an Air Ambulance Helicpoter for a number of years and you don't want to say I wish I had worn ?

Congratulations on your new bike and many safe rides to you.

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum. Today my husband bought me the 2007 M50 Limited. It's sharp and I'm looking forward to taking it out and breaking it in. I've been reading up a lot so I make sure I break it in corretly so any tips you may have will be appreciated.

Thanks,

M50GAL

I hardly go into these other files so I thought I'd poke my head in here.

I can believe this - I had a Citroen Saxo VTR in England that I bought brand new and I drove the "bollocks" off that thing - it's stated top speed was 117 mph. I had it up to 135mph consistently.
I could outrun my friend's BMW 325i on a straight line sprint.

I think that was due to my complete disregard for the break in period.

Having said that, I'm babying my S50 and try and keep it to half throttle - but that's more because it'sa brand new bike and I'm almost a brand new rider.

Just like the other posts say, follow some of the owners manual, but mostly use your ears for the way the bike sounds, and feels....thats what I did, and I have 10,000mi. on mine now and im loving it :)

Yep. It was all burned, and it had to be rebuilt. I saw that episode right before I rode me bike for the first time. I was scared.

Last Friday, won $100 from old Megabucks ticket in wallet.:bluethum: Today, Saturday put deposit on 2007 M50 Limited. I have been lurking around this forum for weeks and finally (now I feel like an owner) belong.

I like the idea of the posted break-in. Hope to be all broke in by Americade June 4-9, in Lake George, NY, just about 100mi from home.
