Jumped the shark?

The show might not be how it was once before like in the early season, but it still definitely makes me laugh...and I agree definitely better than some of the stuff that is out there.

That's how I feel. But then again, to be honest, I didn't watch beyond season nine. I guess for me, it started out with the Poochy episode, then the episode where Homer and Flanders went to Vegas and get hitched.

I'm surprised I've never posted in this thread back in the day.

My sis and I have always maintained that the show jumped the shark around the time Homer laid an egg in that TOH episode. I don't remeraber if it was season 13 of 14, but it was followed by a couple seasons of episodes involving strangely violent animals and other bizarre sequences. At one point, I even stopped watching for several years, but I was impressed by the quality of the movie and started watching the show again. I must say that last two seasons have had some episodes that were quite good. :)

ETA: this is the only half-hour comedy I watch and I agree it's still way better than anything else out there.

Even at its worst, there's always at least two or three huge laughs per episode, which is more than I can say for most comedic shows. And I do think they've done a better job in the last couple of years. That said, I hate that term..."jump the shark," and how it's over used in our society.

Well it may have something to do with the fact that it's on 5 nights a week, basically all year round. Means lots of repeats but as soon as the new season screens in the U.S, we basically get it straight away.

Huh. I was guessing one or two seasons behind, but you crazy koala lovers proved me wrong.

Cyn, that's a good point. There have been comedies that have never made it to where The Simpsons is today, even, but when comparing the show to itself, the scale does change. (I'm hoping that made sense.)

It does  I think it will still stay popular but for me I feel like quality keeps decreasing as the seasons go on .. in saying that it's still a lot better then some TV shows on today!

This show has been on for 14 years. If it had jumped the shark, The Simpsons would have died a horrible death by now, right? There have been shows, well-written shows, that never reached that milestone.

I think if one of the main actors were to be replaced, the show would definitely jump the shark.

I dont think the Simpsons have jumped the shark. I agree with sarzy Simpson is a classic. It's entertaining, smart, and different types of people can enjoy it.

I think there was a time where The Simpsons was on the verge of jumping the shark, but it's redeemed itself in newer epsiodes - they've been really funny. It's impossible for it to jump the shark now, IMO. They've done some crazy things over the years, yet people still watch and there's still quality. So no, The Simspons hasn't jumped :).

Yeah, I know it's an old thread, but I thought this could be another good discussion.

I still maintain that the show really hasn't jumped the shark. There may have been episodes here and there that sucked big time, but as I said before, if the show had jumped the shark, it wouldn't be around for 16 seasons.

I have to admit there was a while there where the episodes didn't seem to be as funny as other seasons. The new new episodes we've been getting in australia though have been cracking me up, so I guess they're back on track again!

I for one never want the Simpsons to end! Unless it gets really really crappy... but I can't imagine them writing really crappy episodes
