Julie & Julia: The movie. Observations.

Yesterday, I finally saw this movie!

No doubt it's been discussed here before.

Up front, it reminded me of some of you rfc BUMS!!!

It was a very charming movie!

Meryrl Streep was perfectly cast!

Amy Adams was also as equally entertaining in her role!

Favorite scene in the whole movie...

After Julia's failure in one of her first class days at the Le C.D.B (how
ever it's spelled) cooking school to chop an onion, Paul comes upstairs to
their apartment and Julia has a mountain of onions on the table, practicing
wildly and they're both constantly blinding their eyes from onion tears.
LOL!!!

Julie,

When I saw it listed in the cable TV guide, I thought to myself, I know
a Julie! :)

Julia's shows come up almost daily on the Cooking channel. Sometimes
with guest chefs, other times by herself in the original TV series.

Bon appetit,

Andy

Shouldn't it be, "I forced THE daughter or I forced MY daughter"????

Yeah, prolly.

Actually I am both. Real name Julia but never went by that because... My
mom couldn't stand Julia Child! She is actually the one who gave me the
name. But she only called me that if I was in trouble. I've always gone by
Julie but on legal stuff I sign Julia.

That's the scene that comes to mind when I think about the movie as
well! I can't remember how many times I have told myself - I want to
chop onions that way as well. Then I remember the tears and say frak
it!

Noemi,

One thing that came as a surprise was seeing Julia smoking cigarettes! I
never knew that. I guess I never expected a gourmet chef to smoke,
deadening their taste buds.

When I gave up cigarettes, not soon after, my taste buds improved
considerably. The same with smelling food aromas.

Best,

Andy

Have you ever seen that Top Chef show? I was amazed at the amount of
smokers on there. I guess I was amazed because here in the Seattle area
smoking is pretty uncommon these days. Yes, you will see the occasional
smokers outside of a bar or restaurant. And you do see some people smoking
in their vehicles. But it is nothing like it was when I was a child.

I smoked for 27 years. I can honestly say it did nothing to deaden my taste
buds.

I thought Meryl Streep was a hoot as Julia Child, but the Julie (Amy
Adams) character was a whiny, snotty, untalented boor that in real
life was shunned by Ms. Child, and rightly so!

Mad Men was a good reminder of the reality of the era. Just about
everybody smoked..... everywhere.... offices, elevators, bars,
restaurants.

Julie,

No, I haven't seen the show. They can smoke on a cooking TV show?

Isn't that kinda/sorta setting a bad example?

I'll watch an episode. I know it's on the Bravo channel here.

My taste buds improved probably by virtue of not smelling like an ashtray
anymore.

Yes. I remember taking my mom to the Dr. and being shocked that there were
those smokers (ashtrays on stands) right there in the waiting room.
Hospitals often allowed smoking in the rooms and if they did not they would
have a smoking room on each floor.

People used to walk around the grocery store smoking. They would put the
cigarettes out on the floor!

When I first started working at K Mart, it was at the start of the lessening
of smoking. We had "No Smoking" signs all over the store. Smoking was
allowed in the cafeteria. However not a day went by for a long time that
somebody didn't light one up somewhere else in the store.

They don't smoke while they are cooking.

But they all live together in a house or apartment (not sure which) and they
often gather outside and smoke. Actually I didn't notice the smoking on the
past few seasons but prior to that there was a lot of it.

The Bad Girl's Club (not a cooking show) used to have a lot of young smokers
on it. I don't remember seeing any smokers this season.

PVC,

Well Amy played the brat role very well. ;)

I wondered if the Julie's food blog was contrived or was it available
years before Julia died. I don't remember when blogs came about but the
timing seemed off.

in theatres and on planes.
