Judy Garland

Does anyone else love this woman? I think she's really great.

I love her in 'The wizard of oz' (which, to me, never seems to grow old) and I have seen her in various other things. She is really over-hyped which ultimatly was quite her downfall (imo due to drugs).

But as an actress/performer I thought she was really 'typical' of the things most Americans try to be to day-but never will.

I remember watching her life story on tv (biopic) a few years back, very hard hitting stuff, the woman who played her looked so much like 'Frances Gumm' (Judy's real name). It was very harrowing.

She was called "the little humpback" by the very nasty Louis B. Mayer ( or was it Jack Warner ? ) and was described as plain or even unattractive ( which is absolute rubbish ), but she was a good hoofer, a great actress and an even greater singer.

A true legend.

I read that. Whoever did say that was wrong totally.

She was a legend, but as she said 'If i'm so much of a legend, why am i so lonely?' :(

EDIT: Does anybody know the title or where I could get a copy of the biopic based on Judy's life? I think i first saw it about five years ago on the history channel or biography channel (something like that) but all I remember is the girl who played Judy as a child (or teens) looked so much like her that I actually thought it was Judy. If anyone knows the title, please tell :)

It's called Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows.

It was actually based on the book written by her daughter Lorna Luft who then went on to co-produce the biopic. Her book is also well worth a read (It's called Me and My Shadows - Living with the Legacy of Judy Garland)

I'm sure you could pick both up from Amazon, Play or even ebay

Oh and both actresses picked to play Judy were absolutely amazing. I know Lorna well and she said she always had Judy Davis in mind to play the older Garland

See, where you know alot about Marilyn-i'm quite 'up' on Judy :D

However I will admit I am still on the look out and learning more about Judy, she seemed lovely but fame deffinatly did change her-mentally and physically.

Whoa, you know Lorna? How interesting. I always felt Lorna was very dignified to her mother's name and never spoke out of turn. I have the upmost respect to her. :)

I am going to check that book out, thanks. And the DVD is available too. But apparently it's been edited heavily and cuts out all the best bits. Thanks for your help though, really! :)

Haha! I have a friend that lives near me *same age.. well a year younger to be precise* and she's obsessed with Judy Garland in the same way that I am Marilyn so we sometimes get together and have 'Old movie nights.'

From what I know of her private life, it wasn't a very happy one. And I can't remember if my friend recommended me any specific books about her life.

I don't know what it is about her that I like.. I just think it's the whole "likability" factor.. you watch her movies and she comes across as someone you'd be frienRAB with in real life, she's quite non threatning.
xx

That's actually a really good way to put it, I actually was thinking earlier on what it was I liked about her because if you look at her when she was younger she doesn't come across as a 'star' in the same way Marilyn did. But you summed that up nicely.

I was shocked a few years back when I realised her name was really Frances Gumm!

Yes sadly there were a fair few scenes cut out. I think you can find them on youtube though. Also check which copy of the dvd you get. Either region 1 or 2 is longer

And yes...Lorna is lovely

That really hurt Bette as it just came from nowhere.

you should really check out 'a star is born' its one of if not the best movie she ever made.

i actually have that movie, my friend (the big Judy fan) got me one of her boxsets for a Christmas one year, it features: In The Good Old Summertime, Love FinRAB Andy Hardy, For Me and My Gal, Zigfield Follies and the 2 I haven't seen yet: A star is Born and Harvey Girls.

I see you must be a big Bette Davis fan (your username being her character in All About Eve) All About Eve is a fantastic film, I originally watched it because Marilyn Monroe has a small bit part in it, but ended up loving the movie itself. I was fortunate enough to see it at the cinema near where I live, because they were playing a whole load of Bette films to celebrate what would have been her 100th birthday. I went to see it because it would have been the first time for me seeing Marilyn on the big screen (I've since seen her in Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at the cinema... there's nothing like it!)

Do you have the Cinema Reserve version of All About Eve? I LOVE the Cinema Reserve DVD's.
xx
PS Sorry for going off topic here!

Yeah, she seems it from what little i've seen of her (like i said, i find her very respective to her mother's name).

I never knew Lorna was involved with the biopic of Judy's life. I think that's something that will make the movie more real.

I always remember watching a scene in that film (five or so years ago) and the 'older' Judy was about to go on stage (or just came off or something) and all 'drugs' and pills were all attatched to the inside of her coat (something similar like that). You could really feel for her. Sad story.

I heard in some interviews Gene Kelly (and others) have said that Judy was a very happy person with a great sense of humour, perhaps that was her outer personality she put on :(
