Joy stick for flight simulator game?

My boyfriend really wants a joystick for his game and i want to secretly get him one, but if i asked he would know im getting it so if you could help it would be great!

I have a windows xp computer and the game is flight simulator 2004, microsoft a century of flight................

Also any idea on cheap places to get one in the uk....except ebay???
