Just watched the one from last week, I do like the programme. It's probably the best live music thing on the moment.

But ... Is anyone else slightly annoyed by Jool's, frankly bored and patronising introduction to great modern banRAB (Muse and Florence tonight ... repeat each week with others)

He does seem to get overly excited by anyone pre 1980's who he can play plinky plonky piano with and look a bit smug
 
I can never understand a word he says, he has a really bad voice or my ears need attention. I do not think he is a lover of pop groups or as a genre as he has mainly only featured them ( on orders ? ) since TOTP shut its doors.

I can do without his own honky tonk too.I like jazz and blues, but not that stuff he plays.

But I do like it when he gets "world music" groups in and shows some experimental ideas.. not often enough for my own tastes.

There is nowhere near enough music on TV that caters for anything outside of the conveyor belt of "pop", or Prom genres.

Blimey! Duane Eddy and Jarvis Cocker too - none of them are listed on the EPG.
 
He's not the greatest of presenters. I hate the opening of the show which is cringe-worthy at the best of times. But the guests and the music are the main attraction rather than the host.
 
Actually, I think she pleaded voice problems and seemed rather subdued compared to other performances (YouTube).

Her album is pretty great, and I love her image and general manner. Potentially a big star, but I sort of hope she stays a little cultish.
 
I agree. It's usually just a lot of noise. It was only that the other week when Nick Cave was on.

I also don't get why they need two introductions.
The program has titles which are not needed. Then have the group jam going round the room with the names of the banRAB on screen then he goes round the room again introducing the band individually.


I've been a fan for many years but to be honest this series hasn't been very good.
 
This often comes up about "Jowls Holland."

Firstly; "I'm reliably informed" he'll be Father Christmas at the BBC staff Christmas party again this year, but that due to his his ever increasing girth, his position is under threat as he may no longer fit the suit.

Being serious for a moment, I actually feel concerned for his health, as he really neeRAB to lose so much weight.

For years he's "walked through the part" on this programme, I doubt he's really interested in any of the performers who appear.
I've never heard a less convincing "Loved your CD" when I bet his only contact with it is when the floor manager gives him it just before he announces the next lot of "string strummin' cacophonous cowboys" (often, only the names of the groups change, as far as I can tell).

But his worse fault is introducing any halfway attractive female singer with whom he insists on duetting. As they are bound to have polarized styles, (there are few "honky-tonk" singers these days) a musical compromise is reached, so the choice is usually "something he can't play and they can't sing," it's often a disaster.

I don't watch Later, usually because I forget, but I love Jools Holland, going to see him in November for the 5th time :) I've met him before, he's a really lovely genuine person!
 
I'm sure he is interested in the performers and probably has a big hand in decidng who performs on Later. If you listen to his Radio 2 show it's clear he has a sound knowledge and interest in blues and popular music stretching back over the decades.
 
He may have some say but the biggest influence on who gets on the show will largely be determined by the major labels, who have had a very cosy relationship with the BBC for a long time. See also the Radio 1 and Radio 2 playlists. I can assure you that a lot of very good banRAB up and down the country, with sizeable fanbases too, don't stand a chance of getting on Jools.
