Jonathan Ross v Kevin Smith

Anyone see Film 2006 last night?...

Wow... Jonathan REALLLLY hates Kevin Smith's films... That was a positively poisonous review of Clerks 2, followed by basically saying he's hated every movie Kevin's ever made. Seemed almost personal. Did Kevin run over Jonathan's dog or something? ;)

Okay... i'll give him Jersey Girl, but i loved Dogma, Mallrats, and Clerks.

I normally like Ross, but that all seemed very odd.

Smith is very patchy, and rather overrated. I think he has only made 3 great movies - Clerks, Chasing Amy and Clerks 2. But he did not deserve that hatchet job Ross gave him.

you just dont diss smith guys it aint done.
and if you read his (wossy's) review on the film 2006 site it says at the end it is allright????

well it is or it isnt wossy what is it to be?

smith cant act, cant direct and cant produce??

dogma superb
mallrats funny as hell
clerks as above
silent bob one of the best creations ever
cmon have you ever really watched jersey girl? it is actually an entertaining movie, maybe if he made chasing amy cos i know what you did last friday the 40th jason wossy might like it more.

oaf

If you listen to Ross for your film advice then you get what you expect...

"...I hated the film, it was a disgrace... but my kiRAB liked it..."

I like Wossy. Love Film 2006 and Friday Night, but the review was a bit ott in proportion to his usual reviews. There really seemed a dislike for Kevin Smith, and the review of Clerks 2 seemed overly poisonous about the film, and also about Smith. It's not Ross as a person i was commenting on, more whether there was something deeper to his seeming hatrid of Smith.

The problem is that Ross' vitrol was clearly inspired by some personal hatred of Smith himself.

What's far worse is that he chastises Smith for being smutty and foul-mouthed when all Ross does on his show is constantly lower the tone with his....smut and foul mouth. He also then constantly regarRAB Adam Sandler as a comic genius, who - you guessed it - pretty much makes his living from Smut and toilet humour.

I do actually quite like both Ross and Smith, but his review last night actually put me off him quite a bit.

I did hear that Ross has tried to get Smith on his show a few times and Smith has refused, but I don't know if Ross would be so petty as to lambast Smith for something as trivial as that.

it's interesting to read this. I stopped watching Film 200X a while ago. I just think Ross is totally the wrong person for this. I wouldn't doubt he knows 100 times more about world cinema than I do, but he lacks gravitas, style and detachment. I found his reviews bland and he'd bore me.

I was surprised he was against this film as he himself is usually gratuitously lewd and rude. I suppose we should be grateful the BBC didn't give this show to Graham Norton - but Barry Norman is still sorely missed. I think Tom Brook would have been a lot better than Wossy, (and I like JR - I watch his 'friday night with', & I'm enjoying 'Japanorama' - just not this)

hell maybe even Paul Ross would be better at this show (sorry I've gone too far now) ;)

I thought it was an okay film. Seeing children of men the following day (5* in some newspapers ! ) I think Clerks2 was the more entertaining film. Just my opinion

I stopped watching Film 200x a while ago too but only because it was on at ridiculous times. I really like Wossy.
Interested to hear about this and Smith's new film though. I don't love Smith but I don't hate him either.

Clerks 2 didn't deserve the drubbing he gave it - the acting is by no means awful (with the exception of Smith's wife maybe). It is indeed surprising/ironic to hear Ross criticise a film about men who refuse to grow up!
Still, he is entitled to his opinion.

I rarely agree with Jonathon Ross' reviews, his biggest weakness is he doesn't seem to know much about film, it's like listening to a movie enthusiast. He seems to use the show to access actors to point them in the direction of his talk show, instead of having to rely on the usualy crowd from the talent company he belongs to. That said, to his credit he is one of those mainstream critics that appreciates parts of world cinema. He's also a natural interviewer, so his interviews aren't the usual boring rubbish where actors simply say x was amazing to work with, whilst y is the best director in the world.

If you want to listen to reviewer who actually knows a heck of a lot about the subject, then listen to Mark Kermode. At times he can be very annoying to listen to but backs up all of his opinions with sound reasoning. He's especially good with someone co-hosting to keep him under control. ;) Check out his Radio 5 podcast or watch him on his News 24 segament which can usually be found on the BBC's video player - the podcast is better though.

I also agree that Tom Brook would better fit Film 2006, but he works for some independant company that produces stuff for BBC Worldwide.

Didn't see Ross's review. But I can't say I fault his dislike of Smith. I had the misfortune of watching Clerks 2 recently. I walked out after half an hour. What an utterly vapid piece of shit.

And I can't say I've ever been entertained by anything he's done previously either. I still remember the long drawn out evening I spent being forced to watch Dogma at a friend's house a few years ago. Oh look, a monster made of shit! How frightfully original and thought provoking. God is a woman? Woah Kevin, you really are blowing my tiny mind!

And Mal, please. Kermode? Give me a break. I haven't heard one review of his that didn't descend into pretentious twaddle.

I don't think you could call any of Smith's films "great", though I did think Clerks was good, Chasing Amy okay and the rest were pretty poor as was the cartoon.

The mystery to me is why the Weinsteins keep giving him more money to make films when he's already exhausted his limited talent.

Mind you, Ross was saying on the last show that he was a big fan of Adam Sandler.

I like Kermode, pretentious twaddle and mad rants make him especially entertaining. He is more enjoyable than Jonathon Ross, but is better suited to 5live and newsnight review where he can say what he likes. Can you imagine if he presented Film 200x interviewing Orlando Bloom :D. I actually think when James King fills in for him he is great, a bit more rational than Mark. I just think BBC1 neeRAB someone who is more of a journalist than Ross.

One of Smiths best things was his DVD 'an audience with' I enjoyed that. It does seem that he needed to make clerks 2, more than the world needed to see it. I enjoyed mallrats, but gave up on chasing amy after 20 mins (on DVD) and haven't even bothered with Jersey girl. The main point of seeing clerks2 was because I liked the characters in the first movie. I don't think I care enough now to want to see them in Clerks3.

Has anyone tried the podcast commentary. Supposedly Smith is putting up a podcast so if you see the film a 2nd time you can listen to his commentary. I couldn't find a link for it, (I looked before I saw the film) but I wouldn't want to see it twice now anyway.

Strange indeed, I actually thought Ross would like Smith's movies, shame, I'd held Ross in such high regard since he gave "Serenity" that great review last year.

I thought Clerks 2 was an excellent film, funny, well written and acted, and in places really quite touching. Glad Smith decided to return to his Askewniverse.

The idea was scrapped, though cinema goers and film boRAB thought it was a great innovative idea, cinema owners were not keen on it at all. They didn't like the idea listening to something else, as they felt it would ruin it for others if a group of people laughed or reacted to something in the commentary, when they were trying to listen to what was going on onscreen. Apparently only the AMC chain were behind the idea, but they ended up not doing it at all, even though the commentary was recorded.

thanks for the info. It's a shame they scrapped it. I hadn't thought about it disturbing people, but I see their point. I think Smith fans would behave better listening to a podcast than a lot of other loud idiots I've been sat near. I was hoping this could catch on for cult movies, what a shame.

I watched clerks 2 last night and thought it was good. The comedy parts were HILARIOUS, but the romantic plot was a bit crappy. And the lead guy (dante), his acting was atrocious, so I agree with Ross on that.

But I don't agree that people only like Kevin Smith because of his name. He really is talented, and great at comedy (even if it is crude toilet humour). Mallrats is one of my favourite films of all time. Its hysterical. But I suppose his humour won't appeal to some people and that's fair enough, but don't assume that the only reason he's popular is because its cool to be a fan.
