Jonah Hex

I was suprised to see that Jonah Hex was released today as I had seen no trailers for it on TV or no other publicity in other media for this film. I thought it was released next weekend untill I had my Cineworld email with cinema times which showed times for Jonah Hex. I know it had terrible reviews in the US when released there and they delayed the release in the UK but I still found it strange that there have been no pubilicity for this film being released. Is this the first time this has happened for a film that the studio has basically given up on?

i looked on the Cineworld website and it's not showing in any of their London cinemas. Enfield is the closest. Either its being held back in London or they are only showing it outside London.

Maybe its only some cinemas have chosen to show it but it does surprise me that cineworlRAB in london are not showing it yet my local cineworld in cardiff is showing it!

My Cineworld Glasgow is showing it too but you're right, no press aRAB, no cinema trailers, no tv aRAB, no advertising whatsoever. The film is meant to be a stinker and apparently has been butchered to death which is why it barely lasts 80mins or so.

Some of the London and nearby CineworlRAB are still showing Shrek 4, Cats & Dogs 2, Twilight and Marmaduke. Perhaps in London it's being held back a bit until the kiRAB go back to school and then it will get released.

If that is true then its strange to release it elsewhere in the UK as why not just release it a few weeks later as in London

With that Transformers lass being in it I wanted to give it a go, but seeing the trailer I'm thinking no. All I could think whilst watching it was why the hell didn't he just cut that skin thing by his mouth - if you see a pic of him you'll know what I'm referring to. It's something minor like that which would really bug me all thru a movie. Just like Whitneys lip freckle did during The Bodyguard.

It's really bizarre. Cineworld are showing listings up to 7 days and there's no Jonah Hex in London.
I connected on films and then got a list of where it's showing.

I then went to the odeon website and did the same

That's it. The Odeon aren't showing this film in London either. How very very bizarre!!!

Picturehouse aren't showing it anywhere.
Vue are showing it nationally including in their Leicester Square cinema.

That is it, just one cinema in the whole of London has this film at the moment.

I think it's becoming apparent that this current trend for filmakers to plunder the depths of comic book obscurity, looking for the next big hit is beginning to wear a little thin.

And obscure is the word...because most of the major comic book characters have either been filmed or are in production...so they seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I read comics for some time during the 70's and 80's, and I had never heard of Jonah Hex. Solomon Kane is another recent example...not really a bad movie but nothing to shout about.

It's not really the licence to print money it once was.

Still...once the studios get this out of their system, and their penchant for filming tv shows, plus this ridiculous zombie/romantic vampire horror trend as well...maybe they will start looking for original stories by new writers.

We can but hope...

I don't believe that is possible. Everything has been done and everything is a copy or an variation of something that has been done previously.

Even if by some fluke something does come along that is original or fresh within 18 months you will have a hole cart load of copycat films.

Take for example Saw. A surprise hit and very gory, sadistic and bloody. Along comes Hostel then another similar gory, sadistic film.

As far as this film goes I think it's biggest problem is lack of recognition. Both Marvel and DC have their A-List characters. Even if you don't know some of them you may have seen their names on comics on the stand. For example if you had never read an X men comic you may know Wolverine by sight. You may not even know his name but he is on so much merchandising he is familiar.

One thing Marvel has alaways been good at is merchandising. Over the last 40 years they've regularly produced cartoons whether it's X-Men, Huk or Spiderman. This has allowed them to use lesser characters in those.

DC on the other hand have really always been known for that top tier. Superman, Batman (and Robin) Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and possibly Aquaman

If they are pushing to make films on popular among comicbook readers but unknown to the majority DC characters such as Jonah Hex I think they are really going to struggle.

Neither Watchmen or V for Vendetta really blew the socks off cinemagoers and came close to breaking box office recorRAB. I think part of their problem was again lack of awareness. Not being either Marvel or DC creations their popularity and to a large degree their entire existance belonged within comic book stores only. There was no brand recognition at all for the majority.
