Jolie's Cleopatra casting starts race row

I think that people are more concerned that she is being played as wholly white when she seems to have some kind of mixed heritage. This would seem to be inaccurate also.

Yes yes! People always go for Cleopatra but Hatshepsut was an epic woman. I'd much rather see a film about her life than another about some manipulative chick and her asp:o

But I guess she's not a dramatic enough name:rolleyes:

I have no problem with black people playing a key part in history - and agree with you and the solid evidence we have that some of the Pharoahs and their Queens were black African/Nubian - but not all of them were. This is proven by the extensive information we have in the form of the mummies of many rulers and the art of the time which shows people similar to the Egyptians that live in the country today i.e. varying in appearance from what most people percieve as African to what some might call Southern European.

As said she was not black.

However, she was not pretty either, she might have been a munter:P

So on that alone, jolie fails to meet the mark:D

Only woman ever to become Pharaoh if I remember correctly? Your correct but I think it's the epic love story that sells Cleopatra - although Hatshepsuts story would be far more interesting IMO! (played by Jolie of course! Sorry - am biased, love her!)

Yes

How convenient. It also seem peculiar that, despite the fact you claim to know much about the book, you have failed to correctly spell Fagin's name ;)

To be quiet honest, the ancient Pharaohs were quite inbred at certain points. I say we solve all this and let a small carrot play the part.

Oh, wait, that's gingerish.

:(

I agree with you. The journalist just being quite racist. I didn't read any journalists complaining about the Nancy in the BBCs Oliver Twist being played by black actresses...
I think Anjolina Jolie is an excellent choice for Cleopatra.

For me it was the bit with Jim Dale explaining to his friend that being put to the Lions was a quick and easy death. One quick bite on the head and it will all be over.

Kenneth Connor says "Thats all very well, but how do I get his head in my mouth?"

:D

Cleopatra's heritage would seem to be Greek and with possibly some Egyptian. I can't see the problem with Angelina Jolie playing her. If a mixed race actress was engaged who looked mixed race this would not fit her ethnic profile would it?

Indian Bollywood actress Aishwayra Rai could play her ( she has pale skin, caucasiod features and light eyes).
There are probably also many Arab or Iranian actresses who could do the job. But the Essence writer insisted on a black actress - not a mediterranean one, for example - which flies in the face of logic and common sense.

Are the people here supporting this journalist aware that Cleopatra was of Greek descent?. Not black African. Not remotely so.

The journalist's ignorance is only matched by their racial paranoia.

Where's yer proof that many of Dicken's characters were black, intended to be black? It is a nonsense and casting directors will take no notice!!

The position put forward in this article is just not tenable. Cleopatra was of the Ptolomaic dynasty who were Greeks from Macedonia. Generally, they had incestuous marriages and there is no proof of any kind that she was in any way black. Her ethnic mix is likely to have been Greek with a little Egyptian.

Depictions of Cleopatra in paintings, sculptures and coins show a Caucasian person. She also has a large, prominent Greek/Egyptian nose. Shouldn't the writer of this article be angling for either a Greek or Arab actress to be playing this role?:rolleyes:

There was a bit of a fuss from Iranian historians when a mixed race black actress was chosen to play Roxanne the Satrap's daughter, in Oliver Stone's film about King Alexander. They pointed out that Roxanne came from a nomadic pale skinned Iranian tribe. Perhaps an Iranian-American or Arab-American should have been selected for this role instead?

We hear the same nonsense discussed about Tutankhamun the Egyptian boy king. Dr Hawass, the head of Egyptian Antiquities has stated quite clearly that he was NOT black.

No doubt the next Egyptian monarch to be Afrocentrised will be Queen Nefertiti - who is also plainly, not black either!!

Whatever her heritage was greek/arab/african/mixed/whatever it is unlikely that she was as fair skinned as Jolie or as plastic looking.

Get a real woman to play the part and please do not inflict Brad on us as well.

The Elizabeth Taylor film was a bit of a borefest so will probably just avoid this who ever they cast.
