Joining the Army after high school? What do you guys think?

i did it and here is my advice...if you ever want a college education (ie do you want to become an officer) then i would say HELL NO, instead, join an ROTC program and get your college paid for and gauranteed to finish before deployment...and still be a part of the army...i am now in ROTC and i am getting ready to leave for airborne school, so you can do some really awesome stuff while you are still in college....it is very hard to go back to the school mindset once you have taken a break

Ignore what your recruiter tells you and the military guys on this forum tell you (most of them are recruiters) ... and if your mother is around, listen to her.

The REALITY is that when you sign up for the military you become "government property" and the government will tell you to kill dirt poor people and rob them of their resources. Some of them will shoot back and despite all the propaganda, the U.S. military is actually taking substantial casualties overseas. Fewer people are coming back dead as they did in Vietnam but the injuries are a lot worse of the people who live. Most common injuries are lost vision, head trauma, brain damage and leg/arm amputations/removals.

Additionally ... anyone signing up now gets sent straight to Iraq.

Joining any branch of the military will be a good move. I went through college straight out of high school and really wish I had enlisted first.

It will make you more responsible and mature. If you decide to go to college after, you'll be much better prepared, not to mention it's pretty much paid for.

It might seem like 4 years is a long time, but it will be over before you know it. If you really like the military, you can get a college degree, become an officer and make a career out of it. Going in at 18 means you can retire at 38 with a pension and benefits, which would be pretty amazing.
