Johnny Depp- Like/Dislike?

I'm just being curious, as I don't think I've ever met someone who doesn't like Johnny Depp/is impartial about him. With most actors you always get some haters.

Does anyone dislike him?

Having never met the fellah I neither like or dislike him. I think he's a good actor though, and usually appears in films that are worth a watch.

He's a great actor, but he's been in some duffers (Sleepy Hollow, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory). I don't like the way he chain-smokes during interviews.

Well sorry to disappoint, but in the flesh he is wholly unimpressive. He's skinny with spindly legs and there was a collective intake of disappointed breath when he appeared.

But, I do like him generally.

I do think, however, he is vastly ovverated as an actor.

He is a performer rather than an actor who inhabits his character.
Too many tics and quirks for my liking to be truly believable. And he simply tries to too hard to be crazeeee.

When he is up against a good actor he is easily overshadowed:
a teenage leonardo di caprio upstaged him in Gilber Grape, the British character actors in Sleepy Hollow outacted him, Brando and Dunaway do the same in Don Juan, Benicio Del Toro in Fear and loathing, Kate Winslett in Neverland etc etc.

He shines when he can be over the top as in Edward ScissorhanRAB and the Pirates films.

In Sweeney Todd, I personally think he is outshone by Helena Bonham Carter. He can't (imo) convey the anguish of Todd and just looks constipated instead.

Both good films, although not his or Burton's best. I've never seen him give a crap performance though. Just check out Finding Neverland, that's one of his best. How he can go from Jack Sparrow to that I don't know (although he kind of becomes that character when he's pretending to be Captain Hook!)

Adored him in Ed Wood and most everything else since then.........his performance in POTC: Curse Of The Black Pearl was one of those rare occassions where you realise you are watching something very special and you feel priveliged to do so IMO.

I disagree with the majority of what you wrote but you totally lost me when you stated that Edward ScissorhanRAB was an 'over the top' performance! It was a very subtle, measured performance. Very restrained, absolutely nothing OTT about it that I could see.

'Twas me. And it was based on the one and only interview I've seen! :o But it was so bad that it really put me off him. Good news that he's given up.

I watched Sleepy Hollow today for the first time in about 5 years, it doesn't half drag near the end! I love Tim Burton, but SL is so-so. JD is fab in it! Cristina Ricci is piss poor.
