John K's latest post...

umm, I'm far from a John K fan (I can barely even stomach the "good" "Ren And Stimpy"), But John is always posting inbetweens from Clampett's cartoons:

Which goes to show not only that the statement that "he only posts really solidly constructed key drawings from old cartoons" completely false, but also that the inbetween drawings in a cartoon really should look good, and not sloppy like those he posted from "Treasure Planet".

Those are posts where he isn't ranting on how horrible Disney is... and those are his best posts. Those posts are actually good posts analyzing the Clampett cartoons.

In the cases where he craps on stuff from Disney or other studios he calls "bland" he'll dig up the ugliest drawings from the whole film and say that's what the whole film looks like.

Then he'll take a really great Rod Scribner or Bob McKimpson drawing from one of the classic Loony Tunes shorts and put it next to it and say: "See?? Old cartoons are better!"

This is not a thread about whether Treasure Planet is good or bad, the guy can dislike it all he wants, he's entitled to his opinion. However, this is a thread about how low he will stoop to discredit Disney.

I don't mind him not liking Treasure Planet... I do, however, dislike his tactics.

i say "gay" all the time, and i'm not homophobic. i also call my friends "*****" all the time and i'm not a chauvonist. i also call my friends "dick," and i'm not a hardcore feminist.

Isn't that basically insulting your friends, then? If I weren't so weak I'd want to punch anyone that called me a dick, no matter what circumstances.

I talk to my friends like that all the time when we all rip on each other, as long as we do it in a way in which we all know the insults are in jest.

I think Treasure Planet is gorgeous. True, when I saw it at the movies, I thought it was kind of "meh" at the time (by which I mean, it's no Lion King), but subsequent viewings on TV have helped me really appreciate it. It's got some cool ideas in it, and Long John Silver, the canine-ish Professor and the feline Captain are great. I'm not sure why it didn't quite gel as a film, but production-wise, it's top-notch IMO.

I've read some of John K's blogs, and I respect his experience in toons, but Bob Clampett fails to impress me much. I'm far more partial to Chuck Jones. And John K's George Liquor character is awful. I have no desire to see any toon with him in it. But there's a bright side - as long as Mr. K's occupied with Liquor, he won't be messing up Ren and Stimpy again.

if you can't joke around with your friends then you're a sad soul. have you ever watched any friars or comedy central roasts? they make fun of the people that they respect...same thing...if my friends were polite to me, and me to them, i'd expect rod serling to pop up.

That facial deformities bit was pretty mean-spirited, considering these people can't control what their faces look like.

And I love how he doesn't mention how almost 75% has looked just as ugly, deformed, and unappealing. Maybe he should take his own advice for once.

Because there are lots of people out there who can't think for themselves and who easily get star-struck ("OMG I'm talking to THE John K!!") and think everything the man says is gospel. Some of what he says makes sense and is technically true and useful. But most of it is just ridiculous, especially because everything he's critical about he judges solely on how it stacks up against the work of Bob Clampett, who John is unfairly biased towards to an extent where he's obsessed. Everything he talks about goes back to Clampett, so it's just silly to take him seriously because he's comparing an entire film medium to one solitary human being.

Actually, if John's POV was more of a voice in the wilderness, I'd be less bothered by it. But thanks to the hivethink created by John and his followers (Amid and Steve Worth), it's almost literally impossible to find a animation blog that talks favorably about modern animation. Everyone who's not actually working on a cartoon (or Jerry Beck) seems to be dedicated to ripping every new cartoon in the most scathing, "funniest", most sarcastic way possible.

I'm not against due criticism, but overt hatred and negativity wears thin, especially in an age of Maddox, The Angry Video Game Nerd, and John Solomon.

I talk favorably about modern animation, but I'm not well-known, so I obviously don't count. I must agree that John K. really is harsh when it comes to critiquing today's animation. Not everything out there sucks.

Ugh yeah... I can name one guy who posts on the blog who is proof of that... a poster by the name of PCUnfunny who's blog is basically a knock off of John's blog (only without the occasionally good stuff).

The guy echo's John's opinions. If John says it's good it's GOOD no matter what. If John says it's crap then it's CRAP.

I, personally, find a lot of his character designs, both in Ren and Stimpy and in other shows, to be ugly and unappealing.
