John K is retiring....

I must echo everyone else's statements and say it seems like he's been retired since APC went off the air.

I think this quote is a being taken too seriously. The way he said, it sounds like it's a while off before he actually retires.

It's sad that he might be retiring. He's the one who really got me into wanting to get a job in the animation business. I like his style of art from when he did Ren and Stimpy (The original).

As for the blog thing, that's for the best. I like him, but he...is obnoxious, I admit. xD

Dang. His current situation is entirely his own fault, but........now I feel sorry for the guy; it's finally dawned on him every door is shut and he'll never achieve his dreams, and no one wants to be in that position.

He must be pretty upset to close one of the most popular and cultist blogs on the Net. Where will all those people go for a leader now?

Isnt there a bio being written about him? I wonder if it'll go into more detail (im assuming that this book will be authorized by john k).

I think you're dead correct about that, and that is a legitimate and honorable vehicle of expression for an artist. That still doesn't make George Liquor a universally appealing or marketable character.

I think Ralph Bakshi put it best in a recent interview: "John has a LOT of issues and makes cartoons to get back at his father". It's funny because it's true.

Honestly, I'm not sure at how great a reason shoving George Liquor on his audiences simply because he is based on his father is. Maybe John K should simply leave his therapy to the professionals.

No, sorry. I actually saw the link for it here in a thread on this board. Look for something titled "new Ralph Bakshi interview" or something.

BTW, i like more his blog than the man himself. Sorry, but heard a man who whilling about everything makes me pissed off.

I have to agree with him about today's Canadian Animation and characters designs how they look because myself i feel the shame to be Canadian. If we stopping to be crude and edgy for god's sake.

BTW, I should say I am glad his blog is public again. Some of the recent classic R&S posts have been really interesting, with the animator/layout breakdowns and production tidbits and what not. And I always welcome Looney Tunes critiques/analyses, though there seem to be less of those nowadays.

I don't like all his posts (those doodle sketches don't do much for me, and I've never been a fan of the bashing posts), but there have been ones which are fun to read and so it would have been a shame to not be able to access it at all.

I love that interview. And yes, the coke scene WAS a drug reference as Bakshi grumpily admits here. I still want to see Wizards II and III.

Do you know what I found most interesting about it? A couple of days ago I rewatched Bakshi's Lord of the Rings and I have to say I REALLY see where he was coming from about Peter Jackson ripping him off. Not so much The Two Towers but Fellowship Of The Ring had MULTIPLE scenes exactly like the Bakshi version that I don't recall being in the book. The most notable being the Ring-Wraiths searching for Frodo and the Hobbits under the mushroomy tree while they sat in terrified silence. The scene is EXACTLY the same in the Bakshi version including camera angles and tone. It's one of the most iconic moments of the first Jackson film and it was cribbed directly from Bakshi with zero attribution. The only thing Jackson has admitted was a "tribute" to the Bakshi film is "Proudfoot" but I seriously think he's talking out of his butt. Jackson's films are obviously ten times better than the animated version but Bakshi has every right to be mad that Jackson copied him multiple times.

Funny how he says that times are tough after so many users ponied up money to donate to a guy that should have a fair amount of money, that was probably his goal when he "retired" for a few hours. I'm glad his blogs back but mostly for the archives, I'm not a fan of his own crude unorginised ink splats (these aren't neccesarly bad things but he's not one to talk about "form").

Now as for George Liver, he's just like Ren but not as funny and I'd imagine a bad character solo.

I haven't seen much of Johns recent or internet work but I do remember APC stinking, his internet stuff stinking, and judging by screenshots his newer stuff has the problems problems as the old:

1. All characters are stupid or angry
2. Left to right character staging usually during arguments (like most newspaper comics)
3. Repetitive expressions
4. Characters with minimum form in movement
5. Cheap backgrounds
6. Continuity problems when shots change

The man has opinions and advice worth reading here and there but I'd rather see halve the stuff he bashes then any of his newer works.

how dare you people diss john k? sure, he's a stubborn jerk sometimes, but who cares? he made ren and stimpy. i doubt dat 99.9% of you can draw like he can. PTOO! I SPIT ON YOU!!!

Wow, now that you bring that up, I guess you're right.

Consider me persuaded, After your compelling argument, I take back everything negative I've ever said about John K. He might be stubborn but his ability to draw better than I can surely allows him to act that way.
