Taken too young at 59. Read a few other message boarRAB and the theme that comes across is that his films never talked down to themes of being a teenager. His young characters always had multiple layers to them but still retained a sense of fun.
Certainly be watching Ferris Bueller and Weird Science soon for the umpteenth time and raising a glass to JH. A few notable quotes from some of the alumni he directed include

It was a bit weird hearing the news for me. I was watching Dogma and just after a scene in praise of him it cut to an ad and while channel hopping I saw it on the news ticker.
Weird Science was one of my faves as a kid.

The man was a total legend for me, Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science are 3 of my all time favourite films. But the "Twist & Shout" sequence in Ferris is probably my all time feel good movie scene - never fails to lift me up
They were great films with great soundtracks especially Danke Schoen, Twist & Shout, Don't You Forget About Me and Oh Yeah
I think one of his most underarrated films was "She's Having A Baby" , more mature and darker with great performances from Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern and a very funny end credits sequence with lots of celebs suggesting baby names.
One of my favourite performances was from the divine Edie Mclurg (Chastity Pariah in Elvira Mistress Of The Dark) as the secretary in Ferris Bueller

ROFLMAO, "Planes,Trains.." is i think the only John Hughes film that i have never watched all the way, i don't know how i've managed to miss it all these years. Will definitely watch it now

So sad Hughes has gone.
I was, honestly, shocked when I read the news tonight.
I don't think there is one film of his (that I have seen) that I haven't just 'clicked' with and loved since then. That's not to say I have seen ALL of his films, but pretty much most of them.
I know he hadn't really been on the movie map since the early 1990s, but I resent the few and far between acknowledgement of his death on British TV news today! If this had been Spielberg, it would have been all over the place!
But, hey, Hughes was somewhat camera shy and enigmatic.
I watched The Breakfast Club tonight as my own little tribute!
Only days ago I watched NL Vacation on TV and was explaining to my family about Anthony Michael Hall being a Hughes favourite castmember.
Oohhh, shite, I dunno. (wipes tear from eye). The first LP I ever bought was 'Bad' by Michael Jackson. When I got a DVD player, the first DVD I bought was 'Uncle Buck'. (double blow there lol!)
The first VHS videotape I bought was 'Vice-Versa'. Watch out Fred Savage and Judge Reinhold!

That is touching stuff. Doesn't surprise me though. John Hughes obviously understood young heaRAB and wrote about them, so why shouldn't he have struck up conversation with them?
I haven't been as touched by the death of an American film star since the death of John Candy. It irritates me beyond belief that the news companies haven't made more of John Hughes' death.

Just heard about this, randomly surfing on IMDB.
Very sad indeed, especially for those of us who were teenagers in the 80s and grew up with movies like Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller.
I'm a big fan of "highbrow" movies, arthouse cinema etc. but I still include Ferris Bueller and Planes, Trains and Automobiles among my all-time favourite films, simply because they're such good entertainment and both films make me grin like an idiot even after multiple viewings.
I'm also genuinely surprised by how few movies Hughes actually directed, but along with writing and producing credits his name seemed to be attached to just about every popular film in the 80s and that's quite an achievement: his name became synonymous with teen-oriented films and for better or worse he personified a whole genre of film-making.
