Joe Murray working on a new show?

It's good to know that Joe Murray is continuing to work on new projects, unlike another certain former Nickelodeon director who's been riding on the success of his 1st and only hit series for a number of years now.

I didn't enjoy Camp Lazlo as much as I did Rocko's Modern Life, but I'm willing to give anything that Mr. Murray is working on a shot.

Looking around, it appears that he pitched this pilot just after Camp Lazlo ended production, which was mid-2007. I don't know if Cartoonstitute started production at that time-frame.

It would be ironic if he did, seeing that Murray slammed Cartoon Network on his blog.

Well, I don't really see his comments as slamming Cartoon Network. He's speaking plainly and honestly. Cartoon Network WAS essentially a cartoon factory and are churning out more live-action than animation these days (three of the four live-action productions coming this summer are from Cartoon Network directly [Survive This isn't] and the two animated offerings aren't from Cartoon Network Studios [plus, the fact that Chowder and cancelation are in the same sentence is disheartening to say the least since it is the best original series from the network since Powerpuff Girls, and I'm not kidding]).

Joe's not telling a lie. I think any new production would be welcome by Cartoon Network.

His new pilot looks great. I hope its more akin to Rocko than Lazlo, 'nuff said. Maybe I'm obsessed, but nowadays every time I hear that an animator is working on a new pilot, my first thought is "it could be for the Cartoonstitute!". I don't care if it's for Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon (or even Disney); I'd be happy if it went to Cartoon Network (that is, if it's more like Rocko than Lazlo), and if it goes to Nick, I'll be glad because I'll know Nick still cares about quality animation.

As for what Cartoon Network is now compared to what it was then, it's no matter of opinion that Cartoon Network was better in every way then compard to how it is now. That's a fact that's universally excepted even by people in the industry themselves, as is evident. But even back then, Cartoon Network had second-party originals too. Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed Edd n' Eddy, Mike Lu & Og, Sheep in the Big City, and Codename: Kids Next Door were all produced out of house. Though at the same time CNS was producing a mass of originals too. If I'm correct, now they supposedly have 6 or 7 shows in production in-house (Flapjack, Adventure Time, Alien Force/Generations, Generator Rex, another adventure show in production at the Glensdale building (according to the TAG blog, though I keep thinking this could be misinformation and that Generator Rex and this show are one and the same), and 2/3 series from the Cartoonstitute), and two out-house original productions; Sym-Bionic Titan from Orphanage Animation and The Secret Saturdays from Porchlight Entertainment. In terms of producing cartoons, Cartoon Network isn't producing any less than it was back then (though it did hit a bump up until recently), but the way the studio is run now might pale in comparison to years when Linda Simensky headed the place. In terms of business direction, Cartoon Network has lost it's path, though.

If Joe Murray makes this new cartoon he's working on with humor like Rocko you can count me in. If its like Lazlo then its an out...I didnt like Camp Lazlo it shouldve been an adult cartoon in my opinion.

Technically, Rocko wasn't an adult cartoon either. Sure, it pushed the envelope more than Lazlo did, but demographically speaking it was still a kids' show. Rocko aired on Nickelodeon, the first kids' network, after all.

His Fish Heads short looks really great, I can't wait to see it. I also like how he prefers using frame-by-frame animation in Flash rather than symbol animation (as he says in his blog he needs "more life to his work") God, I wish I had a tablet...

And that stuff he said about Cartoon Network was pretty legit, sad to say. Compared to its golden age, Cartoon Network really is dead. Less in-house productions, more (mediocre) acquisitions, and live action.
Screw you, Stuart Snyder.

For the record, John K.'s done quite a bit more since the end of the original Ren & Stimpy than Stephen Hillenberg has since he left SpongeBob (PS: Whatever happened to Hillenberg? I don't he's do anything even remotely notable in nearly half a decade, and it's kinda depressing that SpongeBob is still continuing without the creator, but that's another story).

But back on-topic, it's nice that Joe Murray is fairy active nowadays, what with his website and all (it sort of makes up for nearly disappearing for a while after Rocko ended). I probably should his ebook soon.

Well, after Rocko ended, Joe started working on some illustrated books in between the long stretch that was Rocko and Lazlo. I'm not sure what else he did, though.

As for John Kricfalusi, he's done a bunch of (short-lived) internet cartoons after Ren & Stimpy. The ******* George Liquor Program, The Ripping Friends, and Weekend Pussy Hunt to be exact. And then there was R&S Adult Party Cartoon. I don't know what Hillenberg's been up to. But isn't he a marine biologist as well? The last of his work I've seen was that he created a few pieces of art for an auction for Cartoon Network back in 2005 or 2006.

I don't really understand why Chowder has so much love. It isn't a bad show in the least but it's definatley not CN's best show since PPG. Ed, Edd and Eddy was and still is great as it's also still the only one of CN Golden Age shows at least still in production. Courage the Cowardly Dog was a very good show. Sheep in the Big City was great imo and it got totally ignored. Time Squad was a funny show. Samurai Jack was a great show. And we can't forget Billy and Mandy Now this is all a matter of opinion just like you saying Chowder was CN best original since PPG but I still disagree with you.

Also out of CN newer shows from 2002 and up, I thought Robot Jones was great but people seem mixed on that show. K.N.D was a decent show that had it's moments but still very enjoyable. Fosters was a very good show. I actually enjoyed Camp Lazlow. My Gym Partner is a Monkey and Squierrl Bou but people seem to be mixed on those 3 shows as well. When it comes down to it, CN just had more originalty with shows before 2006. Something like Sheep in the Big City or even Robot Jones would more then likely not even have gotten a chance with CN in this age.

Anyways I agree with Joe Murray and his blog and I don't care what channel his show goes to as long as it's a good show. I just keep hoping that guys that made animation in the 90s and early 00s who haven't made something in years decide to make a new series or new animators decide to make some truly original shows akin to the creative spark of shows back then.
