Jim Carrey is Like James Bond...

Say what you want about Jim, but in Ace Ventura, The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar he has me in stitches. He's a very funny man.

I can't stand him in comedies, but I loved him in 'The Truman Show' and 'The Majestic.' He is a very good straight actor, unfortunately most people seem to prefer him to be OTT.

There aren't that many films he's done that I would consider crap. 'Fun With Dick and Jane' is one, I suppose. 'The Number 23' was just OK. But he's got a few great ones coming up including Ripley's Believe It Or Not and next year's A Christmas Carol (done by Robert Zemeckis in the same motion-capture style as Beowulf)

The only Jim Carrey movie I have ever liked is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I think he should have won awarRAB for his performence in that because he was brilliant in it.

The rest of Carrey's films I've seen though were formulatic pap.

Not everything, but when it's blatantly staring you straight in the face as "the same old shit", then yeah, I feel comfortable pre-judging it. If I'm wrong, I'll apologise.

Has he had work done? his eyes look different, he seems more wide eyed than ever, only noticed when he was promoting the film on BBC breakfast interview last week.

that's my point it ISN'T blatantly staring you in the face.

The only available evidence is the trailer, and it's nowhere near as bad as the likes of Bruce Almighty.

The only thing blatantly staring you in the face is your own prejudice.

You may still prove to be correct when the film comes out, but there is no real evidence what so ever to support your own theory.

As Harry Loryane would say - it's a basic thinking error.

...in that they both have the first name James. And nothing else in common whatsoever.

And when he is doing that the results are generally awful too.

I have a nagging suspicion that Jim Carrey is actually very talented - but he couldn't pick a good script if it hit him in the face. When he played The Riddler in the risible 'Batman Forever', his macchiavellian moments were the only watchable things in an otherwise dreadful movie. Like many comics, he proved that he could also make a truly nasty bad guy. What I would like to see him try is something that involves a bit of subtlety.

Let me re-iterate:

If I'm wrong, I'll apologise. The trailer looks like the same old shit, to me. Yes, it looks nowhere near as bad a Brew Sol My Tea, but I get frustrated watching an obviously talented individual ruining it for himself all for the quick buck. It's like Van Gogh saying, "sod this bollocks - I'm gonna do some finger painting."

I just saw a brief trailer for this on TV and I have to agree with you. I saw Jim Carrey acting in his usual comedic over-the-top style which is nothing like Danny Wallace in the book. Danny is just an ordinary man who gets into some daft situations because he keeps saying yes even when he clearly shouldn't, but while the situations can be crazy Danny himself isn't, certainly nothing like the character it appears that Jim Carrey will be playing. It's a shame because I think a really good film could have been made by sticking close to the book, although perhaps not by Hollywood.
