They simply couldn't believe that human beings could behave that way to other human beings.
They were also assuaged into disbelief, by all the denials, by the authorities.
People react the same way towards the hideous ways that babies are murdered in abortion. They believe the propaganda, and not the facts.

I assume you are talking about the Holocaust. the Jews could not comprehend how the Germans, who were an enlightened people full of culture and spirit could be so sadistic and inhuman. they lived in hope to the moment the germans came to collect them. even when they arrived at the death camps they were deceived and believed it will be a passing phase and things will be normal again once the germans win some victories in the war. Mind you, such a catastrophe will never happen again to the jews
