jesus camp, wtf!

So! I just got done watching the documentary entitled "Jesus Camp"
I am completely disgusted.

Keep in mind, i was raised in a very strict cultish southern baptist home...

My experience in churches is fucking IDENTICAL to what i saw in this film, sans speaking in tongues. I was that eleven year old "moved by the holy spirit" I believed whole-heartedly that jesus was lord and savior... i would break down in tears and "rededicate" my life to jesus, because i had sinned. Perhaps you don't grasp the severity of this. SINNED! I was fucking eleven!

In the film, they had a special guest speaker at Jesus Camp, teaching these children (ages 5-12) that abortion is wrong. He even had plastic molds of embryos and fetuses that he passed around and let all of the children touch. To see that no matter how small, they are still people. The tiniest embryo (which in reality is nothing more than a blob of protoplasm) had the face of a tiny baby. I was shocked. The guest speaker (who reminded me, strangely, of Hulk Hogan) told them they need to rise up and be warriors for jesus. to fight the war against it. THE WAR?!!? Go fuck yourselves.
These kids have no idea. Not only do they have no idea what abortion really IS, but they have no idea what sort of decision they may one day be faced with. They have no fucking CLUE! It is my prediction that if this sort of exhortion carries on throughout their adult lives, it will be extremely difficult if not impossible to survive in the real world. It's doggy-dog.

This is first time i have been exposed to this sort of maniacal religious fervor since i left alabama. I have done everything in my power to avoid the exposure.
It left me w/a horrible feeling deep inside. I fully regret watching it.

fuck!

I shook my head, i dropped my jaw and covered my mouth. I cried. My heart and soul bleed for these kids. For the ones that will never question their faith or open their minds to other fucking possibilities!!! For the ones that DO challenge everything that has been fucking branded onto their innocent impressionable minds and are ridiculed or looked down upon or scoffed at for thinking outside of the fucking box... the fucking bars, man. For wanting to discover and learn more of this world... "They can't all be wrong."

No one knows for sure. No one living will EVER know for sure.

So in conclusion, FUCK religion, and FUCK all of these adults, these fucking zealots, that are trying to save the world and our government with this BULLSHIT!

My father grew up in a non religious (communist) environment. He was also a chemist back in the 60's. He may not attend church or mosque, but he lives his life more righteously than most, no drinking or smoking. Officially there was no religion, but there was religion in the home. Religion is necessary, but like everything else, too much of a good thing is bad. Even the Koran says too much religious zeal is bad. That message is always lost to the extremists of any faith. Even though my father has his faults, your story reminds me to be thankful I was raised to think in a more open way. It sucks when people use fear tactics to promote God, if indeed they are promoting God and not their own personal agendas. Religion is a business many times.

This sounds more like a movie review than a life sucks issue.

However, I too, was completely disturbed by that movie. I did get a few laughs from the irony of the camp...

Kids on Fire at Devil's Lake.:D

yeah this movie shows just how low the religious right has to stoop to create jesus fearing people in the modern world. Never mind these kids probily didnt choose to go, never mind that there basicaly being brainwashed. What disturbs me the most is that these people pay money to send their kids to be turned into zealots and they see no harm in it.

If we sent kids to Nazi camp would people be disturbed? Hell yes, rightly so in most cases.
If we sent kids to Muslim camp would people be disturbed?
Hell yes they would because its not "their" god thats being crammed down the throats of youth.
But because this is Jesus and christianity were attacking it and they must create "holy warriors" to fend off the vicious liberal assaults and show kids how evils like abortion, condoms and race mixing are bad.

Fuck em, they make my life suck by exsisting and i make theirs suck by resisting.

There's actually some cultish type of 'Christianity' near where I live. All the people in this cult are called Children of David, and live on what looks like a military base, complete with guards at the gate. They grow all their own food, and never leave the base.

It's weird as hell.

dude! are you serious? was that a typo?
i absolutely disagree
perhaps necessary for SOME people. IMO religion (in any form) is merely a structure of beliefs thought up by humans that need some sort of justification. something that allows them to be able to say, "it's all going to be ok!" or, "i did something horrible, but it's ok, my god will forgive me" or, "my life means something!"

the way i see it, if you are a good person, YOU WILL BE OK!!! no matter what you believe... ;)

O M G. I totally relate to what you just said. I too was raised Southern Baptist, and while I still hold on to some of the basic (very basic) beliefs, I am waaaaaaaay far away from the brain washed place I once was. You don't even want to get me STARTED on what I think of fundamentalists in politics. That post would go on for pages and pages and be peppered with the most foul language you could ever imagine.

I've also seen that video. And while I have heard it compared to "boy scout and girl scout camp" it is nothing of the sort.

Unfortunately, freedom of religion dictates that we allow/tolerate some extremist craziness. I've gotten to the point now where I do the same thing you do when I see it though...it makes me sick. It makes me cry. I feel literal grief over what I know they are doing to the minds of the children who are going to have a VERY very long fight to take back their own ability to think, weigh, measure, and decide for themselves. Every human being should be entitled to the right to make major decisions (such as religion and politics) for themselves. It truly shouldn't be dictated to them. But this "evangelizing" of their own, is part of their belief system and it was going on 40 years ago and hundreds of years ago. I don't see that changing.

So what do you do? The only person you ultimately have control over is yourself, in my opinion. So I just don't, like you said, expose myself to much of that behavior any more, even if it's in the form of media. For me....it's toxic and literally makes me ill. I work out my beliefs, thoughts and feelings between me and MY Higher Power and just TRY like all hell to not get too upset over this sort of thing.

I will defend "them" on one count. They are, in their minds, "teaching" their children the values (or lack thereof, in my opinion) that are important to them. I think most parents do this. And while I do not agree with most of what they are "teaching," I have to say that I taught MY children too. I just taught them differently. I taught them to THINK, and not to blindly follow anything. I believe the way I do based on experiences in my life that have taught me, not on what one, two, or twenty people have said. I want my kids to do the same thing. Every human being is different.

My three children have three entirely different "belief systems," (for lack of a better word), and none of them are fundamentalists. One of my three is an atheist. Two are Christian (by choice), but even the two of them have ENTIRELY different ideas and only one of those two goes to an organized religion type of "church," the other one does not believe in organized religion, denominations, or "church" at all. I neither discourage or condone anything in regards to those choices. They are theirs to make. They are young adults.

Amazingly, there is no arguing in our household in regards to religion either. They have been taught that it is purely an individual matter and completely respect each other's views. For that....I pat myself on the back. Because it was NOT like that in my home growing up. Perhaps that is why I was so adamant about it for them.

I am still Christian (church is not involved in that practice for me), but I in no way ascribe to MOST of the doctrinal beliefs of the Baptist denomination, nor any OTHER denominational church. I also np longer "debate" matters of religion in real life, nor over the internet. It's an exercise in futility to attempt to explain YOUR own life experiences to anyone else. They never believe you anyway, and there's no benefit in trying to convince anyone of anything. We should all be free to think for ourselves.

------------------------------------

tl:dr?: For all the tl:dr people. I said...I agree, it's a horrible travesty. It's their right though and I think they're ignorant on many counts. But I want freedom to think and act along with my own beliefs, as I do, so I must respect others' rights as well and I taught my children the same. But yeah...it's brainwashing. Sad and sickening.

As usual, I agree with DG. Most people that profess to be "Christian" aren't even following the teachings of Christ.

of course they dont see any harm in it! they are raising their children to be "just like them." and unfortunately, "just like them" is not a good thing

its SICK, i tell you, SICK... debauched, depraved

on that note, my cat just got his balls chopped off today... he hates "god"

LoL @ your last sentence
rock the fuck on dude

im going to recommend a book (hopefully most of you read)
its called "Ishmael" by Daniel Quinn
read it. it will change how you view the world and everything that's wrong with it.

and sorry it was posted under "life sucks" and not "movie review"
forgive me, i am n00b at WTF

wow... that made my nipples hard.

your children are lucky to have you as a mother...
one day, when i become a mother, i hope to instill the same sort of ideals that you have. you are awesome :)

as far as your defending them... i agree that it's important to teach your children values... i also understand that they dont really KNOW any better
the parent's are brainwashed too... and THAT is fucking sad

it took my mother YEARS to realize that it was bullshit, but im SO proud of her for opening her eyes.

its OK to believe in whatever you like!!! whatever gets you through the day...
just DONT push it, ya know?

in the film, there was this one kid, couldnt have been a day over 10...
SOBBING because he wasn't sure if he believed in god...
i wanted to cradle him and let him know that it was OK, and congratulate him for questioning the beliefs of his parents and thinking for himself!
it made my physically ILL to watch this.

there is SO much more to be said, i just honestly dont know how to put it into words... and if i did, it would take at least two years =

OMG don't get me all excited like that, you're probably too young for me. lol

NO SHIT!! Can I say "amen" here? roflmao

THAT is the part of this video that pissed me off the fucking most!!!!! I wanted to jump through my monitor and start strangling those dumb fucks. Nothing like encouraging your kids to be mindless lemmings. GRRRRRRRRRRR. People that are not allowed to ever say they "don't know," or not allowed TO "not know" something, will be very insecure people, controlled by fear and manipulation, and never be able to LEARN ANYTHING. How can you learn if you "know" all the time???
