Back at 'cha:

Escoffier came up with this fruit and ice cream dish in about 1870 and
is named after the heroine of an Offenbach operetta.

We saw it at 12 PM CST as that's when our local affiliate shows it.

We are big Jeopardy fans and got a kick out of the computer. It doesn't
seem able to grasp some of the fine nuances of human thought.

I was a contestant on Jeopardy way back in 1972.

Spelling doesn't count. Cooking does.

Watson also cant tell what incorrect answers have already been offered
by other contestants. IMONSHO, that's clearly a bug not a feature (or
lack thereof). Speech recognition would be a no-brainer for
Watson - a computer specifically programmed to play Jeopardy! It
wouldn't even have to be exact - it just has to ask itself "Does my
first choice answer SOUND LIKE what that other contestant(s) just
said?" before it rings in.

And...? :-)

There seem to bring back a lot of former contestants. There's nothing
to stop you from qualifying again!

I thought it was to honor soprano Nellie Melba, who maybe SANG an
Offenbach role. (Like Tettrazini....another of the opera firmament.)

Ha, I just finished watching both shows a few minutes ago,
before I saw this thread.

Amusing to hear a computer say Chicks Dig Me for $200.

*Shrug* too easy, but then i prefer a Fraises Bernhardt to a Peches
Melba any day.

"Who is Nellie Melba, Alex?"

Though i wouldn't turn down a coupes Adelina Patti.

And don't even get me started on the fillet of sole he named after a
then popular prostitute:)

Ok so much for poirs Belle Helene, now what is the dish he named after a
famous prostitute of the day and its alternative title if serving to a
"Lady"?

I watched the PBS special and the inflection in the computer voice in
one answer made it unintentionally humorous to the human audience. The
host actually commented on it.

But it was just cadence, the computer was not trying to be funny, it
just was.

Neat! Back then it was one of the top game shows. Now they have game
shows that don't even require knowing anything. I'm glad the one I'm
thinking of isn't such a hit anymore. It was entertaining but no skill
involved. Deal or no deal. lol

It has to understand the question first before it can find an answer.
If you've ever watched Jeopardy and heard the phrasing of the
"answers" then you'd know they are not easily parsed, even by humans.

For those that still want to see it, it's a three part championship.
Watson (the computer) is playing against two other former Jeopardy
champions (who are human, of course). So it's be on tomorrow and
Wednesday.

As a long-time programmer and general computer enthusiast, it's pretty
interesting. But I guess to non-techies it might sound kinda ho-hum
nerdy.

Speaking of nerdy, did anybody take note of the audience? It's a
bunch of management marketing dweebs and nerds in suits with "IBM"
tattooed on their foreheads.

I did notice, and commented oh, they still all wear that same

It aired locally at 4:30. My company hauled us all into the
cafeteria to watch on the big-screen TV's, and gave us Popsicles. :-)

I thought Watson did remarkably well dealing with the ambiguity and
cleverness of the clues. I'm not sure who I want to win, but I'm
glad Watson is not embarrassing itself and IBM. (of course, the
game's not over yet)
