In a Jeep Grand Cherokee 1998 There is a small, slow leak of what seems like oil coming from a rectangular container that is not the oil pan. It is located more towards the rear (by about a foot) and in the centre of the vehicle (between the front seats, I suppose) I want to know the name of this part. It is held on by 8 bolts.

Any ideas??
I will check on what was mentioned in the first two answers. Thanks.

Does the drive shaft come out the back of this? Transmission pan... Check the gasket make make sure the bolts are torqued correctly. 4wd and the drive shaft comes out the front running forward? Transfer case.

i am guessing either the gearbox or the gearbox XD. what i mean is the gearbox (1,2,3,4,5,R) or the gearbox( allows 4X4) this box transfers shaft movement from the gearbox to the back and the front. am guessing it's this. nothing else i can think of
