Jeep Cherokee Sport like car that works well in snow?

What is a car like the Jeep Cherokee Sport that works well in all sorts of weather, is reliable, and is fairly inexpensive. Or is the Jeep Cherokee Sport good for the things I mentioned?
 
Cherokees aren't bad, but they are gas hogs. My son has one, and really complains about the mileage, even with the V-6. I've got a 2000 S-10 Blazer; it doesn't do bad on mileage, and is great in snow.
