The rear differential on my jeep cherokee makes a loud humming noise when i accelerate. it gets even louder when i make a left turn? whats the problem and how much should it cost?

Sounds like the ring&pinion gear. Jeeps are expensive to repair ! Take it to a qualified mechanic ! Might be cheaper to get a rear-end asy. from a salvage yard.

Well it sounds like the differential case is running out of fluid or is about to break down. If you can check and see if there is a huge 10 inch plate over the diff. case between the axles, there should be 10 bolts holding the case plate on and a bracket with a tube most likely bolted to one of these bolts.

I just did mine it takes about 2 hours to do, you first get a catch pan and some differential oil, 1 quart should be enough, a seal gasket for the replacement of the seal, and some red gasket high temp sealant, large flat head screwdriver, wire bristle brush, chock blocks, 2 ton jack, 3" flat scraper, 3" extension and a basic socket set mm and standard.

Located on top of the differential is a screw hole it is a 3/8" square it can be opened with an extension from a socket wrench this is your fill hole feel around and find it.

Unbolt all the bolts in a circular fashion loosening the bolts gradually as you work your way around the plate, then once you have all the bolts out you can apply a screwdriver into the crack between the plate and the diff. and drain fluid into a pan.

Remove the plate and inspect the gears in the differential see if any are cracked or worn, this diagnosis with a flashlight should be easy, if you see wear or cracks, you should seek a mechanic but this refill procedure is just for no cracks and no wear.

Scrape off all the excess seal and brush it clean with the wire brush, test the seal first before you seal it in with a test fit process, apply a layer of red sealant to the diff. plate and then line up the seal and place it on and press down, now it should line up exactly considering you got the right part, all holes should match, if it doesn't you will have to take the plate down to the auto store.

Next start at the 12 o'clock position and insert a bolt to hold the plate in and go around either clockwise or counter your choice just be concise when you tighten the bolts, tighten a few turns with the wrench all the way around until it is almost complete. Then once you have it all snugged up, give it 1/4 turn past full all the way around.

Insert the 3/8" socket extension in the top hole where the fill plug is and you may need a breaker bar as well sorry forgot to say that, and open the plug, make sure the socket is fully inserted you do not want to strip out or round out this hole!!

Once removed, open the bottle and insert a small funnel if can if not plug the end of the bottle with your finger until you get in position of insertion and put it in the hole. Well my friend it will fill up easily and may overflow but if you are concerned at any point how full it is you can insert a finger and probe for the level and continue to fill until full.
Then just reinsert the plug and tighten down and you are done.

Total cost 2 hours and $45

This is the most likely cause of the issue, however it could also be something to do with your left hand side wheel, axle, or bearings in that area. As for these repairs you need you first have a professional check it and diagnose the issues some shops will do a free diagnosis. If it turns out it is the issue I mentioned and gave instructions you are ready to do the work yourself and will not spend $275 for repairs.

If you have a sealed differential housing I am sorry you will have to have a mechanic work on it and it will be expensive.
