Jeep 4X4H on dry, paved roads?

I just got an auto transmission rubicon. In the manual it says not to drive 4X4 high on paved roads. Why is this? is it the same for 4X4 low?

All these answers are correct - I got my 1st 4x4 (an old IHC Scout 80) back in 1973 and this has been the word ever since.

no it will change the gear ratios and red lining 5th will only get you up to 25 or 30.

yes it is inadvisable and unnecessary, a dry paved surface has too much traction and in order for the 4x4 to work as its designed it needs to have some slip so that parts do not get torn up especially when turning, so dirt mud ice snow all allow plenty of extry slip
