Jeep 2000 Cherokee Sport is Dying on the road?

My Jeep 2000 cherokee Sport, 4.0L, 146,000 miles is continually dying as I drive on the road. As i'm driving, the RPM's will occasionally hit 0 and the car will turn off. If I hit the gas pedal hard, it will sometimes turn back on or i'll have to pull it off the road and turn it back on by turning the key. If I pull over and it doesn't turn on, I may have to wait between 15 minutes to a whole day before it finally will. When it won't turn on and i'm trying, the lights turn on in the car and the starter starts to click, but the engine will just not start. I've tried to have people jump the car when it dies and won't start, but it doesn't work.

The driving is also a bit off, it seems that I have to give it more gas than normal and the steering is a bit tighter. When I stop at stoplights, the RPM's start around 800 and slowly drift down to 500 or lower while i'm sitting there.

People have suggested that it's a bad battery, or the alternator is shot, but i'm not entirely sure. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.
