Jaws

One of the best films of all time, pity they had to spoil it by doing sequels.

I watched a documentary on the Bio channel a few weeks ago on the making of it called Jaws: The Inside Story, it was a brilliant insight to the story, the cast and crew and how the film nearly never happened.

I never tire of this movie. It's one of those films where you think I'll just watch this scene and end up watching the whole movie again.

A great example of creating tension without revealing the vilain.

Incredible soundtrack too.

Was that one of those dreadful Bio programmes where they spend 2 hours talking about something but are unable to show any clips of it.?

There's a great 2 hour documentary on the dvd .

It is a great film but it has to be said that the model shark toward the end does let it down a bit.

Maybe some CGI adjustments Steve?

It's perfect in virtually every respect, the only flaw is the shark itself but they don't show it that much so it's easy to ignore, plus it was made in 1975 when effects weren't so good.

Jaws 2 is a pretty good sequel imho, and Jaws 3 has its moments (though very few of them). Four is an abortion.

Where did I say that ?
Spielberg performed a dreadful CGI update on ET but that does not necessarily mean CGI was available in 1982 does it ? (although an early form of it was in use in Tron)

Anyone in the real world with common sense would realise that I was referring to a CGI adjustment today - now .
Ok?

Pixars first CGI action was in Young Sherlock Holmes in 1985

Meanwhile back in reality , and while Jaws is an excellent film the shark does spoil it toward the end as its so bad

I'm not so sure that CGI would help. The shark is not so bad when underwater. It is only when it leaps onto the boat that that the issue arises and CGI would make it worse, not better.

I agree its only when the shark appears on the boat that things go down hill but you can't possibly know what a CGI enhancement would look like unless they do it
At the very least they could make it look like a real shark and not a cardboard cut out.

The fake shark that shoots out into thin air at Marty McFly in Back to the Future 2 looks more real

I have to say that even by todays standarRAB, the effects in jaws are pretty good. I'm not opposed to CGI but sometimes it looks like blatant CGI (an example of this is Deep Blue Sea).

Wholeheartedly agree, and for this reason its in the Handful of films that are Must Buy on whatever format im currently using, when the Blu Ray release happens i will buy it

I have no problem with the shark in Jaws, actually I think it looks pretty damn good still.

It's sad models are replaced with CGI so often these days, this is one of my main problems with CGI, it can be used to great affect but is far too often used simply as a tool for lazy film makers.

People talk about the Shark being bad when it jumps up onto the boat but in all honesty I've never even noticed, using a model like that means there's a very real physical presence for the actors to work with, this for me always seems to achieve better results. Just like how real blood splats always look better than the crappy CGI ones.

Watched it when I was ten, scared the crap out of me. Appalling what it did to the shark population though, even the author regretted the hundreRAB of millions that died because of the hysteria the film caused.

Really hope the proper documentary on this film, 'The Shark is Still Working' gets either a theatrical release soon or a blu-ray release. It looks and sound like a great piece of work and tells the true legacy of Jaws.

I saw Jaws 3 on ITV4 the other night, I had forgotten what an awful, awful film it was.

It's also the reason I still don't rate 3D, Directors forget about story and plot and just concentrate on getting 3D shots in.

Though some will probably cite more famous moments, such as the head in the boat, the 'dolly-shot', the first attack on the beach etc...for me that opening moment where the girl gets bitten is the most truly disturbing.

And I think it works for 2 main reasons - firstly that you don't see the shark...fear of the unknown.

But more importantly it was how the actress sold the shot. It was her reaction that did it...a kind of initial 'what the hell was that?', to a more disturbing 'Oh shit...something bit me!', to the awful realisation of 'I am going to be eaten alive!!!'

Yeesh...it always gets me!

The books' description of the shark attack is even more terrifying.
She knows something has happened, and she reaches down to feel her foot...and there's nothing there
She can feel the end of the exposed bone of her thigh, then she goes into shock.
