Japanese Item Inquiry: Small Plush Toys on a String, Sometimes With Bells... What...

...is This? When I was traveling through Japan, I kept finding these, esp. near temples and shrines..
I wanted to get one, but they were very expensive, as they were handmade.
I have no idea of the name and the only picture I can find is this one:

These ones look like people, but sometimes the plush creatures were cats or deer.
Does anyone know what they are?
