Japanese Cellphones - What Should I Get?

I have a friend who is going to Japan soon. From what I understand Japan is really big on cell phones so I figure I'll have him pick up a couple for me. The problem is I don't know what's available there.

My only requirements are GSM compatible and that it looks good. Any purchases from there will be solely for looks. I'm currently interested in the LG Shine and LG Chocolate Black Label II (Platinum) but I'm definitely open to suggestions.
 
Best be very careful or all you will have is an expensive paperweight. The cell phone system in Japan is mainly WCDMA and not compatible with the US network so more likely than not, the phone won't work here, even if you can unlock it. Even if the phone does work, it is likely the US carrier will not permit it on the network.

the phones that u want, both of those lgs are not avalible yet

the only ones u'll be looking at from japan is things from vodaphone/softbank

the newest phone thats unlocked right now is the 903SH if not the 904SH will be unlocked soon

other then that ur stuck

cuase most of the japanese phoens uses anyother system ex. W-cdma so thing sis u wont be able to use any
