Japanese/Asian Horror Films

Its not Virus or Vital is it? Where they turn to green mush? That was pretty lame!

Other quite lame south east asian horror / films - Ghost train was pretty crap. Good cinematography but crap and slow story.
Watched Doll Master on weRAB and its... OK.
I thought Dark Water wasnt to hot either.

Speaking of hollywood remakes and even though its not horror, i have to mention the OLDBOY is getting the treatment...

thai horror is good too, usually with a more supernatural air. i've enjoyed 999-9999 and Sin Sisters. filipino horror is not bad either, usually very catholic and involving demons and possession and the like.

Visitor Q is a good japanese horror film, got a lot of fun in that : murder, rape, extreme violence, necrophilia and so on

Are the 'eye-watering scenes' in Audition particularly gory? I always find Asian horror works far better than the Hollywood style simply because there is hardly any gore and the horror is almost exclusively psychological. I'll probably check this out, but it sounRAB like it's less a spooky horror (in the Ringu/Eye/Ju-On sense) and more a gory one?Would that be correct?

ermm its difficult to describe - its not gory as such no, you really need to see it all the way through to see what everyone means lol. its just has some really horrible scenes in it but its definately not a blood-fest. Check it out :)

I've always fancied watching the original versions of The Ring. Daft question but I assume there are subtitles??? Does reading them take away some of the atmosphere???

Hi :) I find that subtitles dont take anyway of the atmosphere at all, quite the opposite infact. When you start watching your not even aware your reading from subtitles as the film goes on!

I love A Tale of Two Sisters, gorgeous film.

If you're a fan of The Ring, it might be worth checking out the genuine sequel, The Spiral. It's a very different film, not really scary (as each book in the series was different - horror, sci-fi and fantasy) but it's interesting to see how the story was supposed to go. When that bombed they made Ring 2 to give us more of what we wanted - scary Sadako!

Audition's great, everyone remembers the ending but there's some other great bits in there, worth sticking with.

Yeah that's how it is for me too. I hardly notice reading the subtitles, and my attention is never away from the actual film. It doesn't detract from the atmosphere either.

In fact, even if an Asian movie is dubbed I always watch it with subtitles, because not only are the dubbed versions poor, but I enjoy listening to the beautiful native language during the film.

Is Spiral the same film as Uzumaki? I thought Uzumaki was utter shite.

Audition was great - such a slow burner to start, really draws you into a false sense of security... everything is not what it seems!

I got a shedload of asian horror when i went to malaysia at christmas, half of them i havnt watched yet, but we got Ponianak 2 (please tell me what this is like), Shutter, Wig, Ghost train, the Eye 10 - about 25 dvRAB in total :D

The most mental film - ever - has to be Gozu - even though its strictly not horror.

Out of all that genre - Tale of Two sisters is my favourite though. Absolutly superb. It has it all. The story confused me the first time around but after watching it again, and checking out others theorys on imdb, i got it! The atmosphere is second to none, the sets, the music, the actresses are fantastic... I could go on. but is want to check out some other threaRAB.

IE If you have never seen tale of two sisters, make that your next choice!

999-9999 is the best, its a bit like a mobile phone version of Ringu, i.e. when people call a number they end up dying in a horrible banner asap

DON'T for the love of god watch the The Crying Tree. It's worse than the worse episode of crossroaRAB!!!!!

I just watched last night into the mirror, which was quite good. I've got Visitor Q, Acacia and Whispering Corridors 1 coming through the post soon.

Any views?

I loved the eye, i went to see in London and it was my first experience of a subtitled film, but i found reading the subtitles didnt distract from the main plot at all.

((( Great thread, worth a bump )))

I think that Hollywood remaking Asian cinema is now completely out of hand - to the point where the big studios are totally supressing the release and distribution of the original (and 9 times out of 10, superior) original. They do this so that they can pass off their inferior remake as an 'original' as in the case of The Ring and The Grudge. Why, oh why, won't they just take a chance and give a major release to a foreign movie with subtitles? Surely American audiences aren't that dumb...

Who knows it may even turn into a giant blockbuster like Crouching Tiger...

Some people are too lazy to read subtitles. I agree, most dubs are very poor and the voice acting is lame, ruins the film more than subtitles ever could.

Not just americans, us brits are pretty ignorant too. Hell, you would think the entire world film industry revolved around hollywood, period drama brit flicks, nick park and pixar - just look at the oscars

Let hollywood get on with it, sod em. WE are in the know! enough people in the east watch themso the asian film industry isnt exactly going to collapse, in the mean time, we can be as smug as we like in the knowledge we saw the superior originals each time hollywood tries and fails to remake *Shudders at the thought of a crouching tiger remake*

In the meantime, get yourself an all region dvd player, newish tv, log on to somewhere like www.yesasia.com and buy as many asian films til your hearts content :):D:)

Some people also can't read subtitles. I have a dyslexic friend, and she can't follow the film and read the subtitles at the same time, it takes her too long to process the written worRAB.

So long as there is the option of subtitles for me, and dubbing for the likes of my friend, I'm a happy bunny :)
