Japanese/Asian Horror Films

Im a HUGE fan of asian horror films and i collect them im so addicted lol. I wondered what everyone else thought?

The most recent movie i got was "Acacia" has anyone seen it and what did u think.

What do u think about the US remaking all these japanese horror films? Personally i think they do a very mediocre job of it. Why remake films that dont need remaking?? I heard that it was tom cruise who bought the rights to lots of these japanese films so he could do precisely that.

Lastly what are your top 5 japanese horror films?? Mine are

1. The Ring - it still creeps me out!!
2. A Tale of 2 sisters - beautifully shot and very scary
3. Into the mirror - the subject is just very scary ie your own reflections killing you!!
4. Dark Water - i love the build up all through the film
5. The Phone - spooky spooky spooky

I'm also a huge fan of Japanese horror. I think they have their own distinct atmospheric style from other horror around the world and imaginative storytelling. They are usually creepy, suspenseful and have genuine scares using a unique visual style. Although I think it's slightly overused, that image of a Japanese woman with long hair over her face and walking in a wierd, unhumanely way, never fails to scare an audience silly. But as for the shite Hollywood crap remakes, I despise them. They've run out on their own ideas and so want to cash in on the Japanese talent for compelling storytelling and imagination. It's disgusting.

The Ring was OK, but pale in comparison to the original and The Ring 2 was simply awful, shows that when they try to put their own ideas together it fails miserably because The Ring 2 was nothing like Ringu 2. The Grudge was a pointless, stupid remake putting American actors into the same film and somehow making it rubbish in the meantime. Amazing! I heard they are remaking A Tale of Two Sisters and The Eye. It's such a waste of time. I wish they wouldn't give the Japanese versions a bad rep, whenever people think of Dark Water they will think of the American version which was rubbish and the original is so much better.

Some of my favorites:

1) Ringu - Effectively creepy and far superior to the American remake.
2) Audition - You have to see this! It's brilliantly wierd and twisted!
3) A Tale of Two Sisters - Excellent. Scary and an Asian classic.
4) Battle Royale - Brilliant for those who like buckets of gore.
5) Ju-on: The Grudge - Superb. Also far superior to the Hollywood drivel.

Others that I have seen and loved:

Ringu 2
Ringu 0
Ju-on
The Eye
The Phone
Dark Water
Evil Dead Trap
Ichi the Killer
Versus

Thank you! I saw this advertised months ago and meant to buy it when it was released but had forgotton the name!

*HeaRAB off to place order*

Hi, I'm new on this forum but I'm looking to write a book about this genre. Lets face it it's brilliant!!
I haven't seen Acacia or into the mirror, but I've seen all the others you mentioned! They're creepy as hell and just as I like them!

Some of my favourites so far:
Ringu ( Sorry, but I really don't like the remake. Remakes to me seem pointless)
Cursed
Audition (just damned sadistic, and brilliant)
Phone
R-Point
A tale of two sisters.

I'm on the look out for as much as I can, for the afore mentioned book! Any help would be fantastic!!

I've always been told Audition is really good. It was shown late one night and I ended up falling asleep (not due to the film) but because I was tired and it was on at about 1am. From the bits I did see (the start) it seemed to have a pretty slow pace. Didn't seem to be much going on?

Worth checking out?

I've only just got into the J-Horror thing over the past 12 Months-or-so and I have to say it's completely revitalised my interest in film. My favourites so far

1: Kairo - Best horror film I've ever seen (and no I didn't get all of it)

2: Ringu (goes without saying)

3: The Eye (Yes I know it's not Japanese!)

4: Dark Water

5: Phone (not just a rip-off of Ringu after all)

There's also some pretty mediocre stuff out there like The Locker and Suicide Manual. Didn't like Audition or either of the Ring sequels - and absolutely detested the Korean remake (Ring Virus).

Couldn't sleep for a week after I saw The Grudge.

Evil Dead Trap near made me puke.

Fell asleep during Whispering Corridors

Haven't seen yet:

One Missed Call
R-Point
Three Extremes
Cursed

etc

I haven't bothered with any of the US remakes, so I can't really comment.

EDIT: Can't believe no-one's mentioned Battle Royale :)

What kind of book are you writing? Your own interpretation of one of the stories? A book about a certain movie? A book about Asian horror and it's relevance to cinema? Or your own, original story?

I did in my first post. It's a great movie, original concept, but the sequel sucked! I noticed you haven't got A Tale of Two Sisters on your list. That in my opinion is a must see Asian horror.

i saw a shite one the other week, something about a load of japanese doctors/nurses in a hospital killing someone by accident and spending the rest of the film trying to cover it up.

trying to remember what it was called now...

You should definately hold out until the end!! You see just how twisted and evil she is, very shocking!

I've seen Kairo, it's very good, worth your attention! And unsurprisingly it's being remade  .

It's more of an encyclopeia/brief synopsis of the genre I suppose. I want to go into the history of the genre, how it began and some of the highlight to look out for, including best writers, directors etc.

I'm not into writing the genre myself, but I think it's a great subject to write about though

I beleive I mentioned the films as Asian/Japanese :D

Oh yes i agree with you on a tale of two sisters - apart from being very atmospheric and spooky - wasnt it shot beautifully? I especially love the scene with the two sisters sitting on the edge of that wooden pier type thing with all the water around them - beautiful!

Definately worth checking out! It has some really eye watering scenes in it to say the least lol. I agree it does take a while to pick up pace but its really worth sticking with it to get to the great ending! :D

Hi no haven't seen it yet because its not out in the uk to buy until the end of March  - the same for "Marebito" which isnt out until late this year - which I can wait to see :)
