Nor would they want you to. The fact is that Japan is a xenophobic walled-off country where non-Japanese are not welcome as anything but temporary laborers.

I didn't read the articles, but it sounRAB like I'd agree with a lot of what he said. Japan has lots of problems these days.
 
Yeah, guys, the whole article should be taken into more consideration here. I mean, I didn't like that Anime Sucks part, but I did get a bit of humor at the "snap-point-salute-HOOOOH" thing he does at that guy.

(Though, the weather? Really? Does that really count?)
 
Japan is constrictive. Oh noes, this is totally new information.

The country's just a prime example of isolation in a world of technology, and how a culture could be so progressive in everything but method.
 
I'll have to read this later for the full details but it doesn't seem to be an anti-anime piece but rather a piece on criticizing Japanese society and pointing out some things that, honestly, if we read through the article some of us can learn from (what mainly caught my eye was the whole commentary on group drinking). It is to some people. There's a distinct trend I've seen, among the anime fan base, to glorify Japan as some wonderous, otaku fantasy land where everything is rosey and perfect. Any criticism tenRAB to get ignored or outright denied.

Progressive is really NOT an adjective I'd apply to Japan unless you're talking about adapting new technology.
 
Yup. The anti-anime thing was only a tiny part of the post (and if you'll notice, he did admit to liking Ponyo). It was more of a rant about being tired of what he felt were weird customs and traditions in Japan. Most of his points focused more on video games than anime, anyway.
 
I detest people who refuse to acknowledge that anime is simply a medium for storytelling and lump it all together.

That's like saying "Books sucks. Just look at the Twilight novels!"
or saying "TV shows suck. Just look at the biggest loser, American Idol, Gossip Girl, or whatever other crappy show you want to name."

They are simply mediums for telling a story. There is no way to put a 'quality control' on a medium. IF someone wants to make a TV show and it's awful and a network decides to air it then it airs. If someone decides to make a crappy anime and a network decides to air it then it airs.
 
I agree with the general sentiment that anime is getting worse. There are some occasional bright spots, but most of the newer stuff is unwatchable for me. The last anime I saw that I thought was really great was Azumanga Daioh.
 
Not really. Every anime board I've been to pops up a thread every 3 months about how disturbed and insular those "wacky, sexually frustrated" Japanese are. This thread right now is beginning to be the 3rd or 4th one on rabroad in the last 8 weeks.

The problem--as always--is when people rely on extremes to categorize something. You're either geeky or not. You're insular or you're not. You're sexist or you're not. You're disturbed or you're not. You're backwarRAB or you're not. You're liberal or you're conservative. For most people, there is no in-between, no exceptions, no compromises.

The answers have always been more complex than the black and white issues outsiders presented them as. Heck, I'm quite sure my concept of Canadian society is quite different from the other Canadians around me. Doesn't make either of our opinions any less valid.
 
Well, seeing as Anime/manga is comparable to the comic book culture/ minor hippie culture of the late 60s to early 70s, I can see why he feels so strongly against anime. It is the same thing over and over again, as in looking the same. Here in America, most animation looks unique, but in Japan, there really is only one style, with a myriad of styles shunned for being different. If I was him, I would more to NYC, sure it is crowded as well, but it is the same mesh of cultures he has in Japan, but most things are in English, rather than most things in Japan being Japanese.

My opinion that is. I respect his opinion, and hope you respect my opinion as well.
 
Well its a decent enough article..I agree with him about the pandering....the anime industry does indeed do alot of pandering (& a decent chunk of it is to the lowest commen denominator.)

I must admit I also some what agree with onepeice being somewhat add..adhd, whatever, it kind of is at times..IMPO....but Yeah the guy does sound overly whiney.
 
A lot of what he said seemed pretty whiney and nitpicky (BAWWWWWW I HATE SMOKING AND MEATS) but I kind of agree with what he said about anime. Even though I enjoy Japanese cartoons, including One Piece or Dragon Ball Z w/ ADHD as he calls it, most anime these days does seem like the same garbage over and over again. Basically it's going through what western cartoons have also gone through.
 
What does it say about me if I'm too ADHD for One Piece?

Keep in mind I also like slow moody series like Haibane Renmei but 400-episode epics, even particularly good ones, just don't hold my attention for long.
