Japan Advice - Do I need to book in advance?

Hello Everyone,

We're going to Japan over new years eve for a period of eight days...we're usually the type that show up at a destination and wing our way around...i.e. don't plan anything...and this has worked very well in the past...

I've been reading a lot online about the new years eve period in Japan and have been told I need to book everything...including trains!! Does anyone have any feedback on this?

Also - we were thinking of going north of Tokyo - does anyone know of any interesting places to visit? The guide books are so broad that it would just be nice to get some expert feedback and list of places that are "must sees"...

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

Yes, book in advance where possible (unless you speak Japanese) through websites or even your Japanese consulate / embassy in your country.

Be aware that some hotels do not allow women (seriously). A friend of mine got turned away (despite booking) because she's female. The hotel didn't realise Claire was a girl's name when she booked.

You have to try Akhiabara shopping district for cool electronics and gadgets that are not available in the west.

Further afield, how about Mt.Fuji or Fukuoka island in the south...?

Kind Regards,

Rupa
