Does anyone else recall this late-night TV show with James Whale hosting guests and a phone-in with a studio audience on Friday (or was it Saturday) nights? I used to love this when I was a student.

I recall a really weird incident on it once. James Whale was just wrapping up the show, and commented he had to rush off to see how his mother was, as she wasn't very well-when suddenly, some bloke from the audience shouted out, in a jeering way, "GOT CANCERRR!" evidently referring to Whale's mother. "Oh, you think that's funny do you!?" answered Whale, adding, "Get the cameras on him!" When they did that, the man was seen jeering and laughing and doing middle-fingers with both hands. He then starts calling out, "Come on then! Outside!" The strangest thing was he wasn't just some prat from the audience, but had been one of the guests earlier, if I recall, and some sort of comedian. Anyone else recall that, or have any other particular memories of the show?
 
I have a VHS tape of one of his shows where he had a male stripper in a roman centurions outfit talking to a man who thought it was all quite disgusting. What he or James Whale didn't realise was that the stripper kept pulling out his manhood, giving it a few rubs and slipping it back into his tunic. Ahhhh...those were the days
 
Linda Nolan. All tits and legs and BIG hair. Constantly drunk (as most were on this bizarro show) IIRC. Proper zoo telly.
 
I remember this show. I quite liked it. It was on around 1.30am on a Friday night if I remember correctly. Does anyone remember Charlie Chuck? I think he's dead now. :(
 
As I recall, it was shown at 1am Saturday mornings on ITV from 1988 to about 1991, broadcast
live from the studios of Radio Aire in Leeds, and was also simulcast on that very radio station.

The late Bernard Manning was also a guest on the show every so often.
 
I loved this show and i remember that incident. I also remember james physically removing someone from the studio too. I can't remember who. Didn't he also walk out of the show and refuse to come back or did i dream this? Lol.
 
Brilliant Whale, brilliant show - there's nothing on TV like it now.

I don't remember seeing the incident mentioned, but what a knob that bloke was.

One film clip he showed that shocked me, made me cry for days and haunted me was of pigs being driven to the slaughterhouse and one didn't want to get off of the lorry. One piece of scum that passed for a human being got on the lorry and dragged the pig off of the ramp, kicking it hard, injured it and knocked it to the ground.

James showed it to highlight the abuse animals often suffer, even at the point before they are slaughtered. I believe he is a strict vegetarian to this day.

I liked the TV show, but it never quite managed to be as good as the Radio Show which preceded it. Monday to Friday, 10pm till 2 on Radio Aire. I blame it for helping me fail at school.
Recorded at Radio Aire studios, which I lived about 5 minutes walk from, I even went down a couple of times when he was broadcasting from outside the building. I helped him win a tug of war.
 
David Kear the man who plays Charlie Chuck is still very much alive and still working, he is a lot younger than he looks he is only in his late 50's now so was only in his 30's on james whale and reeves and Mortimer.
 
Yes live from Radio Aire, I was living in Cumbria and Red Rose in Lancashire simulcasted it, as well as it being on TV. Very near the knuckle at times. He had a spell in the cooler for going too far and Nina Myskow stood in
 
I believe that to be the 'Sinitta' incident. Sad to say he now claims it was all a set-up, and it was always his intention to have an early night, and let someone else do the show.

Was it him that sang 'Blue Spanish Eyes', whilst the audience chanted "Number one! Number one!" ?

Did I dream that? :-)
 
I remember the show as I was on it once.

One of my press agents less wise decisions.

You needed a drink to do live TV in Leeds at that hour.

I used to like the James Whale show.
I remember a gorgeous blonde woman used to dress in various outfits, including a white PVC nurses outfit !
Can't remember her name.
