James Bond Ultimate Edition Dvd's

Time to start again! Will start by just getting the early ones where the remastering will be more noticeable I think and then wait until theres a 3 for 2 style promotion again to pick up the later ones. A View To A Kill has a pretty decent surround sound track as it is IIRC.

Wonder if the Casino Royale dvd will fit nicely on the end of the collection like Die Another Day did.

Well,I'm hanging on to mine in case any of the great documentaries are missed out on the new ones.
And if your set is R2 then the titles I mentioned above are pretty worthless thanks to BBFC interference.
I wonder if we'll get a complete OHMSS this time aswell

What cuts did they make to OHMSS? For years, it was shown on TV minus the last half of the gun-barrel sequence and the opening scene (they cut into the second scene halfway through Q's new equipment pitch to M). Some of the later scenes involving the other Secret Service Agent around Piz Gloria were cut too (I have it on video from it's 3rd showing on Good Friday, 1983). Then, when Laserdiscs were relaunched in the early 90's, I got an import from America and finally saw what I thought to be the whole film. Obviously not from what you say above. Yep, my set is R2.

Its not cut as in CENSORED like Goldeneye and Licence To Kill are but the definitive OHMSS is still absent.
As a Bond collector I had them recorded from ITV in the 80's,then rental big box VHS,then the eventual retail remastered versions, then Laserdisc then DVD,so I've seen the differences like you.
I recorded OHMSS on Easter weekend 1982(or was it 1983?).
This was the longest version ITV ever showed.
That print had the safe cracking sequence in GumbolRAB office that was missing on VHS until about 1993.
Ironically, that year ITV showed the new remaster but edited the scene out themselves, along with lots of other material, like the close up of Rigg with a knife at her throat in the pre title sequence etc(dark days of editing Bond at ITV it was back then).
But ignoring the edited ITV versions ,the 1993 release ws AFAIK as much as we'll ever get.
It was the same on LD.
But the DVD has used some different shots during the stock car sequence, which is apparently just a different edit, rather than being cut.
There is also dialogue missing between Tracy and Blofeld in Piz Gloria, and dialogue missing elsewhere.
This is the type of problem we have with Thunderball also.
I think its included on the R2 dvd(I have R1 of Thunderball) but there's a short featurette that has a series of clips prepared originally for the
Laserdisc set that compares alternate dialogue and edits that were used for the US and UK versions of Thunderball.
It looks like similar things happened to OHMSS.
What version this new dvd will be is unknown.
I read that there were additional sequences filmed with Dudley Sutton (as Hilary Bray's assistant) who turned out to be a Blofeld employee and there was a rooftop chase that was cut for timing.
This has never been proven, but you must have noticed how abrupt the jump is from the scene with 007 and Bray chatting in the office to the first shot in Switzerland, and this would have been where the chase would appear.
Who knows?

Thanks for that. You know your Bond don't you?! OHMSS was 1st shown on Bank Holiday Monday 4th September 1978. It was then repeated two years later on Saturday 6th September 1980 (I still have the TV Times for both). I recorded both broadcasts on audio tape using a direct link via a 5 pin din lead (I was 12 in '78). The 3rd showing on Good Friday 1983, was the same edit as the other two. I also noticed the cuts you mentioned on the commercial releases and now that a full restoration has been done for this new release, we may finally get the definitive version of this Bond classic. Here's hoping!

So it was 1983 after all.
I remember that weekend as my dad was decorating the living room so I had to sit through OHMSS and pause for the aRAB with the stench of drying paint.
Same for the UK premiere of "10" with Dudley Moore on the Bank Holiday Monday.
Even though I had all the 007 films commercially from 1985 I was fan enough to keep an eye on ITV screenings of certain moments for years afterwarRAB.
The funniest one has to be ITV's attempt to screen Goldfinger live from a film print rather than transferring via telecine before broadcast(either that or the telecine guy was drunk ),and it was great watching the panning and scanning from one side to the other. While one caption appeared on the left, they skated over to it,but by the time they got there a caption appeared on the right but bits were missing on the extreme right side, and so they went on through the whole credit sequence.
It may have been 1986,but I think it was World Cup time and Thunderball was shown on a Sunday afternoon. This is the first time I recall an 007 movie on as early as 4pm.
But this was the start of the era of major editing(apart from cuts for time). The pre title sequence of Thunderball had the strangulation with the poker cut,so the death of Bond's assailant seemed very odd.
From then on,apart from the usual cuts to fit inside a 2 hour slot censorship got silly.
Octopussy's premiere saw cuts to the yo-yo saw scenes, and the subsequent screening of Thunderball was hilarious.Early Saturday evening it was,and in the final underwater battle, all those harpoons were fired, but not a single one landed anywhere if you watched.Every harpoon hit was cut,and the blood on the knife and harpoon through the arm were missing for years.
But now, even last years afternoon showing had all the gore in,and the cuts I remember from OHMSS were also in.
ITV have taken until the 21st Century to get into the 20th Century.
But lets hope MGM or Sony or whoever owns them now does not letus down.
I would be very pleasantly surprised if the dvd's of the cut films were recertificated for the UK

Probaly trying to milk the last drops out of DVD. I would wait for BRD/HDDVD. What has been edited out of Goldeneye, Licence to ill and TND? Sadly ITV will own the rights to the new casino royale.

You've got a point there. With the advent of HD TV, how long will it before a new HD version of each Bond film comes out? Considering how they've made high quality transfers this time (almost 4 times the standard resolution), they must have this idea in mind. Once we get HD DVD players, I reckon it'll only be a matter of time. Better hold on for a while me thinks.

oh my god there is no way i am forking out for a whole new load of them since i spent a small bloody fortune on getting them on Video which i gave to my dad to then get them all on dvd!!!

Thats doubtful in the extreme as the uncut version of Licence to Kill only runs about 10-15 seconRAB longer than the dvd release.
The original UK video release was the BBFC cut version which had extensive cuts of just under one minute.
The US version was also trimmed of some extreme moments ,but only the aforementioned 10-15 seconRAB.
The completely uncut version was released on VHS in Venezuela.
The cuts were simply toning down of the gory moments we already see.
The guy exploding in the pressure chamber, the guy falling into the machinery near the end,a closeup of Felix Leiters leg stump as he was fed to the sharks, and one other cut I can't recall offhand.
The only way you would have a version almost 5 minutes longer would be by comparing the R2 and R1 by comparing the PAL running time which is 4% faster than NTSC,which equates to about 2 minutes per hour.
The worst cut was on the UK VHS release.
At the start all the footage showing Sanchez whipping the girl was removed,as was the sound of her boyfriend having his heart cut out.
No doubt the 007 movies will be out on Blu-Ray at some point, but I'd rather not wait for at least a year or so.
ITV own terrestrial screening rights to Casino Royale.
This will have no effect on any dvd release, and if it is only terrestrial, then the film should be on Sky Movies,or at least Box Office.
Goldeneye had one of the best moments cut when Famke Janssen parachutes down into the trees and head butts the Bond girl.
All the head butts and more were cut from the climactic fight between Bond and Sean Bean.
TND had sound cuts to lessen the impact of hits during the fights(I know -its stupid-and so do the BBFC now).
LTK was badly cut on VHS but is almost uncut now
