As long as your are 21 or older, and don't take it into a prohibited place such as a bar, and don't get caught with it while drunk, you will never, ever serve jail time for carrying it.
At worst, you will lose the gun and get a fine and community service. However, if you have to use it to defend your life or that of a loved one, and the cops come to investigate, the District Attorney will not even press charges.
I see this in Oklahoma all the time. They've been telling women it's OK to pack a gun for decades...long before concealed carry was legal. Guys, not so much, but again, the DA's use discretion.
