Jack Russell terrier. night whining...?

My 3 year old JRT is new to our home, fully potty trained but is not fully trained in the basics like sitting and staying ( he is getting there)

We have a crate set up for him. We put him in the crate only when we leave out to our jobs and when we eat ( he gets sick when we feed him scraps)

he can not sleep in our bed due to my fiance having dog allergies. We are trying to keep him but in my neighborhood excessive barking brings great penalties. Also he will wake my 3 year old daughter if he keeps making noise at night.

I want to know what the best way to train him to sleep quietly at night in his crate will be?

A neighbor offered for us to borrow his "shock" collar for a few weeks but I am not sold on the idea of using it.

we need pretty fast results so if anyone has any suggestions that they have used and has worked please let me know
I don't plan on dumping our dog just because we have to take care of our financial responsibilities so thats not an option at this point. Poppy you have some good points but you must not work for a living. also, if I did have to get rid of my dog, my 3 year old would be crushed for some time because they love each other.

as far as my extended comments, I would like to know if anyone has found a good method of getting there Jrt used to being crated.
 
How much exercise is he getting? If he's crated all day while you are gone, he's likely to have a lot of excess energy keeping him up at night. JRT's are generally high-energy dogs. More exercise and training during the day/evening will probably help him to be more relaxed (and quieter!) at night.
 
I don't like crate training. So I advise you to get rid of the crate & keep your Jack in a room that does not have carpet & use a child's gate to keep him in there. It is far more humane.

If he house broken why can't he have run of the house & a doggie door for him to get out back to potty. Or a doggie door off the room you keep him in.

I was a groomer for many years & I would recommend that they use a doggie door & most of them said it was the best thing they did for their dogs & them selves too.

He wines cause he is not comfortabe, he'a a little scared, & he doesn't like being by himself.

I have more than one dog so that they have company & I got two ferrets so they can entertaine each other. An animal by its self is very lonely if you don't have time for it. Perhaps you could get him a companion. He would be much happier with another dog there.

You should find another home for him,one than has someone home that can be with him and start his training..It really isn't fair to bring a new pet into your home and there's no one there with him through the day..It's really a no win problem you are facing..

a friend of ours is an engineer who makes those "shock" collars and like a doofus put one on himself....he said after that he would NEVER use it on a dog. (even though he designs them) so that's not a good idea. if it's warm enough outside, put the crate on the porch or another part of your house until the dog gets used to it. we have 4 dogs, all crate trained and we just endured the whining phase until it passed. don't worry, it will eventually. try putting toys, or a small food/water dish in with him. we used a large stuffed animal that our dog could really snuggle with and that really helped.

good luck though...it is really up to your particular dog as to what will work :)
