Noy knocking your product, they are good speakers but it is not what I expected. Bought the speakers at Niehaus in Litchfield during appreciation days. Put them in and still cant hear them real good at highway speeds without turning them way up. Intercom and CB are turned off. I didnt put the insulation in because I couldnt get the fairing on with it inside. Would that make that much difference. If I put you rear speakers in would that help.
 
I want to upgrade the speakers in my 04 Roadglide and would like to know if there is a difference in the year on the stereos. Most of the swap out stereos are sold for 98-05 and 06-10. If I put a later model kit in my 04 will it burn out the stock stereo.

The acoustic foam serves an important role, but I used Dynamat Extreme instead of the J&M provided foam to make closing up the fairing that much easier. I would recommend getting some Dynamat Extreme and putting that in. You will notice the difference. Right now, you are losing a lot of sound to the front of the bike instead of directing it towards your body and ears. You can run the rear speakers if you want just for the added benefit as they do make a difference. Try the Dynamat Extreme and then go from there. You can always add the rear speakers and the J&M amp for an even bigger concert hall experience.

98-05 headunits are rated at 8 ohms and are made by Radio Sound
06-10 headunits are rated at 2 ohms and are made by Harman/Kardon

You would need J&M's 8 ohm speakers made specifically for your 04 headunit. If you decide to run the 2 ohm speakers on your 04 Road Glide, you will most likely overheat the headunit and potentially damage the coil inside the speaker. We don't advise doing this unless you are running a 2 ohm amp with the 2 ohm J&M 7.25" speakers.

If you want to run the 2 ohm speakers for the newer bikes, you will need to get the J&M amp that is also rated at 2 ohms for the correct impedence rating.

We have sold the J&M amp and 2 ohm speakers to guys with 98-05 bikes and so far, everything has worked out well.

In order to run the amp on a 98-05 ROAD GLIDE, the following is printed on their website in the Road Glide amp's description:

IMPORTANT NOTE : Some 1998 thru 2005 model Road-Glides require the replacement of the factory grill assembly/speaker adapters in order for the J&M 250w amp kit and/or 7.25 speaker kit to be installed. It will be necessary to remove the outer fairing and inspect the factory installed grill/adapter assemblies to determine if they need to be replaced. The early style assemblies can be identified by the method of attachment to the inner fairing. If the screws attaching the speaker go completely through the grill/adapter and into the inner fairing mounting bosses you have the early style assemblies and they will need to be replaced with the later style factory grill/adapter assemblies and mounting hardware listed below. The later style grill/adapter utilizes independent hardware to attach it to the inner fairing then the speaker is attached to the grill/adapter with 4 additional screws. If you have the later style assemblies, the J&M 250w amp kit and/or 7.25 speaker kit will fit with no additional parts or hardware needed.

It concerns me that you could not get the fairing clamshell back on, with the acoustic foam in place ,,,,,

that tells me that you may not have the speakers, spacers, grills and brackets seated in place properly and that could really cause performance problems, especially in the bass area ,,,,,

our J&M guys installed our 7.25" speakers in over 100 Harleys during the Sturgis rally last week ,,, every one of them had the J&M acoustic foam installed and every fairing clamshell was re-installed without issues ,,,,,
 
Don't put the foam and just buy some Dynamat. That's what I did and had no problems closing the shell.

I personally feel that installing the speakers without the amp is a waste of money. The ones I heard without the amp sounded great, but wondered how they would sound going 70-80MPH, compared to my install with the amp.

Again, JMO.
 
You can get Dynamat and any auto stereo shop or online. It does have adhesive on the back. Peel and stick!

I'm in NJ and got mine at a local car stereo specialty shop. Paid about $40 for two packages that contained two 12x12 pads each. Doesn't look pretty after I was finished, but man it was worth every penny. You might be able to find it cheaper on the web.

I used the foam that came with the speakers to trace the pads, and then used all the left over and put it all over the inside (as you can see in the pic).
