J&M 7.25 Speaker Review

Well I read through all 60 pages of this thread over the last couple of evenings, mostly all positive feedback on the 7.25" speakers. I have a '09 Ultra and honestly don't have any issues with hearing the stock speakers at any speed, they come thru loud, crisp and clear...(no helmet, a 8" clearview shield, and Rush mufflers). The only complaint would be lack of much bass. FWIW, my 2 previous bikes were a '06 Royalstar Venture and a '04 Wing, both had 4" speakers so the Ultra has more bass than either of those did by far but definitely could use more. We mostly listen to CD's, a Mp3 player or the Mp3 player on my GPS thru the Aux port, rarely do I listen to the radio. My Mp3 player has an adjustable equalizer so I can dial it in along with the bike's treble/bass control and get some decent sounding music out of the stock speakers. Well, I took the plunge and ordered some 7.25's last night thru Phat Performance Parts, hoping to get more low bass vs. stock. It seems to me the guys with Street glides complain the most about the stock set up (SG 40 watts 2 channels vs. UC 80 watts 4 channel). I know a guy with a SG and he's mentioned how the stereo sucks more than once. I never personally heard the stereo on a SG so I can't compare it with a UC but honestly in stock form my UC is head and shoulders above the RSV and the Wing (I know Honda has changed theirs since the '04 I had). A bud of mine put Hogtunes in his CVO Ultra (speakers, amp and tweeter pod) and when he crank it up for me there was plenty of volume but also a lot of distortion. I honestly feel he didn't has the audio controls dialed in so it's not right throw rocks at the Hogtunes system without personally messing with the controls myself (he thought it sounded great so it goes to show you how opinions differ). Both my wife and I have a good ear when it comes to hearing sound quality so I'll post back once I receive my J&M's to voice my 2 cents.... I'm hoping they provide me the bass I'm looking for ($220 for speakers isn't cheap so I hope there's a big improvement). Larry
 
The J&M speakers are worth every penny. You will see that once you install them. The bass is unlike any other replacement Harley touring bike speaker out there. You will be very pleased with the results. Nobody has yet to be disappointed to date.

If you have an Ultra, you should definitely upgrade the rear speakers too. The last '09 Ultra we upgraded front and rear sounded like a rolling concert WITHOUT an amp.

Gofer I had the same concern for the tweeter wires, there is not really any "indent" for them to go thru. I just kind of flattened them as best I could . I still think they may rub a little. Hopefully it wont be a problem. JMJOHN or DR.V-Twin have you seen any issues with this ? By the way its an 07 Streetglide..

In the grill itself on the outside edge has two squared off recess spots where the wires are to be run out at, it's the inside where the wires are still muddled in the plastic that make contact with the "spacer/reduding ring". I have heard no issues and installed exactly per instructions.
 
I just got back from Bikeweek and while there I rode 1400 miles around Florida with two buddies who like to ride fast. Rode from Sanford to Sebring, stayed overnite then to Ft Lauderdale and back up to Daytona. Four hundred miles that day. The other days we were in St. Augustine, Ocala, Deland - you get the idea. I had a 9" Longride x-stream shield on for the ride. We were at 70 to 80 whenever possible and sometimes a little faster. I played mostly Springsteen and ZZ Top. The sound power coming out of my fairing at 70 was clear and LOUD! I'm sure if I had a taller windshield on it would have been even more listenable. With the Tweeterpods and Hogtunes amp I am very happy. I replaced the Hogtunes speakers with the J&M's -- they are a good choice.
 
I heard they break the brackets over time. Is that true? If not i need some. i got the biketronics 6.5s and they are all distorted. cant hear nothing at cruising speed 88.
 
Gofer that is exactly where I am talking about. The wires seem like they could get pinched there and rub raw, though it would only be plastic so maybe it wont hurt.. Time will tell
